Wellesley-in-Vienna

The German Department sponsors its own Junior Year Abroad Program, located in Vienna, Austria. The program offers both one and two semester options that allow students of almost any major to pursue their academic interests. Our Resident Director (who is also a faculty member of the University of Vienna) on site helps with student integration into university life.

Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna is the oldest university in a German-speaking country and enrolls students in more than 180 departments and programs. Internships at various political, cultural, and social institutions are available. Wellesley financial aid may be used to study in Vienna.

Admission to the program is competitive and is decided on the strength of a student's application. A student should show a record of above average work in her courses, reach a correspondingly high level of communicative and grammatical competency, and obtain two letters of recommendation from professors who can attest to her preparation for the experience at a German-speaking university. Applicants must normally reach the minimum level of the fourth or fifth semester of German (Ger 202 or Ger 23x).

January-in-Vienna

The German Department offers a 1.0 credit program in Vienna during Wintersession. January-in-Vienna includes a German 202W and a cultural program related to the arts, history, and politics of Austria.
