Wellesley-in-Vienna

The German Department of Wellesley College sponsors its own Junior-Year-Abroad program, located in Vienna, Austria.

The popular program offers a full-year and a one-semester option (spring term only).

A Resident Director oversees the program on site and helps with student integration into university life. She also offers a core course for all participants.

Students enrolled at the University of Vienna for one year take eight courses to receive eight Wellesley credits. One-semester students take four courses.

The University of Vienna offers more than 180 departments and programs. For offerings see the University of Vienna website.

Tutors from the individual departments of the University will be available to our participants.

Students live in dormitories that are located close to the old part of the city and the University. The dorms have 24-hour internet access.

Wellesley financial aid may be used to study in Vienna. Wellesley-in-Vienna also offers internships at various political, cultural, and social institutions.

Requirements: Applicants must normally reach the minimum level of German 231 or German 239; courses beyond this level are preferred. If admitted to the program, a student is required to take a German course in the semester before going to Vienna.

To apply, please consult with Prof. Thomas Nolden, the Program Director in the German Department. Please send your e-mail inquiries to tnolden@wellesley.edu.

Internship Program:

Our program offers a wide range of possibilities for internships. In previous years Wellesley students worked at various institutions such as a famous architectural firm, an International relations organization, a Human Resource management company, various music and cultural organizations and as a correspondent for Newsweek. Internships in the sciences are also available.

The resident director helps to place the students according to their interests and personal expectations. Knafel Stipends are available for internships on a competitive basis. Watch for the March 1st deadline. Please visit this link on the homepage of the Center for Work and Service for the application forms: http://www.wellesley.edu/CWS/students/viennaint.html.

Requirement: Applicants must have been admitted to our Wellesley-in-Vienna exchange program.
