Valuing Work @ Wellesley College is the name of our integrated program of performance management, skills and career development, and compensation for administrative staff at the College. We call it Valuing Work @ Wellesley because the program has been designed to articulate, support and reinforce the value of work in our organization. We value everyone who contributes to Wellesley College's ongoing success and strong future in appropriate and meaningful ways. Underlying elements that are critical to this success are:

  • Providing a world-class, premier educational experience for women that is reflected in the quality and diversity of our students, faculty and administrative staff, high academic standards, and exceptional levels of service
  • Seeking ways to more effectively deliver educational services through the use of technology and strong organizational structure and operations
  • Strengthening and maintaining our financial foundation through resource development and sound fiscal management

The Valuing Work @ Wellesley program represents the blueprint and the tools to ensure this success.

Elements of the Program

The Valuing Work @ Wellesley program has 4 integrated pieces:

Role Documentation , the description of one's role and the skills and competencies needed to perform it effectively.

Role Classification (Local Only), the system of determining levels for Wellesley's administrative roles through the description and comparison of these various skills and competencies.

Salary Structure and Salary Administration (Local Only), tools and processes that ensure our pay levels are competitive externally, and our administration of that pay is handled fairly within the College.

Performance Management , the process, tools, and good management required to help each individual and group contribute meaningfully to Wellesley's success and be recognized for that contribution.
         -
Employee Recognition - Everyone wants to be acknowledged for a job done well. Employee recognition is used by managers and supervisors to recognize the positive actions and behaviors of the employees reporting to them.

Program Purpose

The Valuing Work @ Wellesley program has been designed to:

  • Articulate clear roles and responsibilities for Wellesley's administrative staff
  • Develop a reward system based on performance that will be viewed as innovative and flexible
  • Encourage open and honest communication about work and reward issues
  • Provide tools to help managers value and reward people
  • Provide checks and balances to ensure and maintain internal equity and external competitiveness

Program History and Methodology

Wellesley's senior leadership endorsed the development of the Valuing Work program to achieve our stated purpose and asked the Human Resources Office to spearhead its design and implementation. Working with outside consulting expertise, a core project team and several design teams worked collaboratively to develop the program's elements. This collaborative approach included the constant involvement and input of administrative staff; this element was critical to the quality and comprehensiveness of our program.

Roles of Employees, Managers, and Senior Leadership

In keeping with the highly collaborative approach used to design and communicate the Valuing Work @ Wellesley program, each of us must actively work to keep it dynamic and meaningful.

  • All members of the Wellesley College community are responsible for communication, decision-making, collaboration, and ongoing improvement of work products and processes.
  • Managers provide leadership, training and recognition of the performance levels that will achieve desired results
  • Senior leadership articulates clear institutional goals, formulates strategies to achieve them and develops/allocates resources to carry out those strategies.
