Molly McCarthy received her Ph.D. in American History in 2004 from
Brandeis University. She is currently revising her dissertation, entitled
“
A Page, A Day: A History of the Daily Diary in America,” an
unconventional survey of diary keeping that uses the diary as a lens
through which to view the transformation of nineteenth-century American
culture, such as the rise of the market, the move towards mechanical
time-consciousness, and the growth of a more individuated self. Her
research and teaching interests include women’s history, the U.S. Civil
War and Reconstruction, material culture and consumption, U.S.
immigration, and the sociology of time. She has published articles in the
New England Quarterly and the online history journal Commonplace (http://www.common-place.org).
McCarthy was awarded the 2003-2004 Mellon Post-Dissertation Fellowship from
the American
Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts, and has received research
support from a variety of institutions including the Winterthur Library
and Museum, the Newberry Library, and the Hagley Library. Before returning
to graduate school, McCarthy was a journalist and member of the Newsday
reporting team awarded the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the TWA
800 crash.
