Dear student,

You can place out of either our 100-level (first year: Elementary Italian 101 and 102) or 200-level (second year: Intermediate Italian 201 an 202) language courses.

You can do this on-line at your convenience, before the beginning of the Fall or Spring semester. Please, read the following criteria carefully to determine which exam is most appropriate for your current language skills.

If you have studied Italian for a few years in high school, but have not taken the Italian AP test, or if you have taken previous college level Italian language courses,we suggest you take Exemption Exam 1 or 2.

If you have taken the Italian AP test in high school and your test score was 3 or 4, we suggest you take Exemption Exam 3 or 4.

If you have taken the Italian AP test in high school and your test score was 5, you automatically place out of our 4th semester Italian 202, and you can move onto the higher 200 level courses.

You should take no longer than 70 minutes to do any of these exams. Do not be unduly concerned if you cannot complete an exam. Do as much as you feel comfortable doing.

Even if you are not yet on campus, Wellesley College’s honor code applies. This means that you should consult neither dictionaries nor textbooks when taking any of these exams.

Once you submit the exam, it will be evaluated by a faculty member from the Department of Italian Studies. You may also be contacted to arrange an interview to gauge the level of your spoken Italian. Your proficiency in Italian will be assessed on the basis of your overall performance in the written exam and in the conversation. You will then be informed about which course would be most suitable for you.
