Flavia Laviosa
Flavia Laviosa holds a Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education and a M.A. in Humanities from SUNY Buffalo. She also earned a M.Sc. in European Film Studies and Criticism at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland; and completed a B.A. Honors in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bari in Italy.
She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of ItalianStudies at Wellesley College, where she teaches culture, film and language courses. Her several administrative responsibilities include coordinating the language program; developing and administering written and oral placement tests; advising first-year students, Italian majors and minors, and students planning to study in Italy. In November 2007, she organized the international film festival and symposium "Visions of Struggle: Women's Filmmaking in the Mediterranean" to which she invited renowned scholars and one film director from the Middle East, Europe and the United States.
The inspiration for her teaching methodology ranges from Humanistic and Cognitive theories, to Communicative principles of foreign language pedagogy, and is also strongly influenced by the Multiple Intelligences theory. Interactive technology and multimedia materials are largely used in her courses to extend and deepen language and culture learning experiences.
With regards to study abroad programs, she has extensive experience in establishing, administering and directing both the Wellesley College winter sessions in Rome and the Eastern College Consortium (E.C.CO. comprising Vassar College, Wellesley College and Wesleyan University) summer sessions in Siena and Lecce, and the year long program in Bologna.

Further, her training practice of foreign language teachers in the United States, Europe, Mexico, the Republic of South Africa, and the People's Republic of China has enabled her to earn international recognition as a Teacher Educator and Foreign Language Departments Evaluator. She has also been active in testing as a certified Italian Oral and Writing Proficiency Trainer and Tester for ACTFL, Test Consultant for the Italian AP and Test Developer for the Italian SAT II.
Flavia Laviosa was awarded the 1998 Gold Medal by the Federation of Abruzzi Association in the USA for her commitment in academic research and her contribution to the development of Italian culture.
