Workstations and Project Rooms
Knapp provides a wide range of workstations and project rooms for the Wellesley College community. Users can watch movies and TV, digitize audio and video, print microfilm, scan slides and more.
Headphones can be checked out from the Knapp Service Desk for use at any of our workstations and outside of the Knapp Center.
Note: Reproducing or digitizing images, audio, or video protected by copyright may be illegal. If you have questions about copyright restrictions, please speak with a Knapp Staff member before beginning your project. For more information, please read Wellesley's Copyright Policy.
Video Viewing - Knapp Stations 1-12
Users can use the equipment at our viewing stations to watch VHS (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) tapes, DVDs from the US and other regions, VCDs, and LaserDiscs as well as the Wellesley College Video Network (WCVN.)
TV listings for WCVN can be found by clicking on the Media Services link in the left menu.
Converting Audio directly to Audio CD - Knapp Station 13
Station 13 provides equipment to copy records, audio cassettes and digital audio tapes (DAT) directly to Audio CD.
You will need to provide your own CD-Rs and can follow our online instructions:
Duplicating VHS Cassettes - Knapp Station 14
Users may duplicate VHS (NTSC) cassettes not protected by copyright using our self-service station following instructions posted at the station.
Users may also make a VHS or DVD Copy Request at the Knapp Service Desk to have up to 6 copies of DVDs, VHS and DV tapes not protected by copyright duplicated.
Microfilm Reading, Saving and Printing - Knapp Station 15
Printing Microfilm is free of charge. Users can read, print and save microfilm as pdf files following instructions posted at the station.
Scanning - Knapp Stations 19-23
Knapp is equipped with 3 Windows and 2 Macintosh Scanning stations. All 5 workstations will allow users to scan images using our 11"x14" flatbed scanners and Photoshop. Users can also scan text into Word, HTML or other document files using OmniPage.
Our Macintosh Stations are equipped with Nikon Slide Scanners which will allow users to scan mounted and unmounted slides and film negatives.
Audio and Video Playing and Digitizing - Knapp Stations 24-38
Our digitizing stations will allow users to watch and grab clips from audio cassette, CD, VHS (NTSC, PAL or SECAM), LaserDisc, DVD (multi-region), VCD and DV tape.
Clips can be edited and exported as QuickTime movies, DVDs, DV or VHS (NTSC only) using our Macintosh computers.
With the help of Knapp staff members, users with their own video camcorders and cables (DV, Hi-8, or VHS) can hook up to our digitizing equipment for both importing and exporting.
Not all stations are capable of working with all formats, so follow our online instructions carefully!
If you are working on a movie or sound file that will be longer than 10 minutes when it is completed, please speak with a Knapp staff member about your project plans. We are happy to help direct you to appropriate technology, give you more information on the time commitment your project will require, and provide tips on how to make your project a successful one. Windows Computers - Knapp Stations 39-43
The 5 Windows computers in Knapp provide the same software as all of our other campus computing labs. In Knapp, priority is given to users working on multimedia projects at these stations. We encourage users needing only email, Word or the Internet to use a Windows computer in one of our other computing labs.
Project Rooms - Knapp 111, 112, and 114
Our project rooms provide space for users to work in groups of 3 or more. Each room provides a table as well as a computer and media equipment. Wellesley College faculty, staff and students can reserve project rooms for up to 3 hours by signing up on the Project Room sign-in sheets outside each door. If the rooms are not reserved they are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. One group member must show a Wellesley College ID at the Knapp Service Desk to be admitted to a project room.
Project Room 111
This project room provides a Macintosh computer capable of digitizing audio and video as well as video viewing equipment.
Project Rooms 112 & 114
These project rooms provide a Windows computer and video viewing equipment.
Tandberg Tape Playing/Recording - Tandberg Language Alcoves
Tandberg Language Alcoves are available on the 3rd floor of Clapp Library.
The Knapp Center provides other playing/recording options in addition to the Tandberg Alcoves:
- CF Audio Recorders will record directly to mp3 files that can be downloaded to a computer.
- USB Headsets will record directly to a computer using your preferred audio software (Knapp prefers Amadeus).
- An iPod and audio tape recorder/players as well as "boom boxes" are also available.
You can find more information on borrowing and using this equipment on the Knapp website or by talking with someone at the Knapp Service Desk (x2369).
