Welcome!
The office of the Advisor to Latina Students is part of the Division of Student Life at Wellesley, and serves as a resource for all Latina students.
Our primary mission is to provide a supportive environment for Latina students and to raise awareness of Latin American culture and issues within the entire Wellesley community. Through events and programs, we are committed to helping build a strong Latina community on campus where students feel valued and supported.
We have two main Latina organizations on campus:
Mezcla is the largest organization for Latina students at Wellesley and serves as a social, political, and cultural group on campus.
Alianza is an organization of Latin American students made up primarily of international students.
We also have Cielito Lindo,
Wellesley's only Latina dance group, that focuses on Baile Folklorico from
different parts of Latin America, modern dances from
the different regions, and contemporary and fusion dances from Latino cultures
in the U.S. Participants often wear traditional costumes and perform a variety
of
dances
on campus ranging from flamenco and folklórico, to bomba y plena and other
dances.
As the Advisor to Latina Students, I provide individual advising, leadership consultation, referrals, information on internships and scholarships, and advocacy.
I also want to remind you all that since Spring '04, I have the support
of Irene Pak, my part-time assistant,
who is there to help me so that I can best help you.
If you have any questions, or would just like to say "hi", please call, e-mail, or stop by.
I look forward to meeting you, and wish you a wonderful year!
Best,
Mared Alicea-Westort
