Student Worker Jessica

"I love working here. It's the ideal job for me. Spine repair requires an intense concentration, but a different kind of concentration than the rest of my day requires and I thoroughly enjoy the work. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and I have a great fondness for books. The facility is quiet and relaxing, but there's also always the possibility for conversation. In all honesty, I wouldn't change a thing."

"I look forward to coming to work. My job gives me a chance to pull back from academics for a few hours and to let my mind wander. I like knowing how to repair and preserve books, music, and maps. I like the fact that the job requires a high degree of accuracy."

"I like the quiet and friendly environment of the conservation facility. Working here gives me the opportunity to work with my hands as well as my mind, and teaches me valuable skills that will help me as I pursue possible museum or archival internships and jobs. I enjoy especially repairing the spines of books because this combines a variety of tasks. Meticulously cleaning the spine is very meditative; sewing and gluing the parts of the book helps me fine tune my handiwork and improve my dexterity. When I am done with my work, I must admit that I don't like cleaning the glue brushes, bcause the small ones do get rather goopy and stubborn. They eventually do come clean though! On the whole, the conservation facility is a wonderful place to work."

"I like the job because it requres a lot of precision and diligence; it keeps you busy. I like my boss (she's nice). I don't like the extreme quietness of the place and being so isolated."
