Introductions
Dan reminded the co-chair about introductions. Included in the 1st part of the meeting were Barbara Preece, executive director of the BLC and Melissa Petze, administrative assistant. Melissa passed around the BLC GoDIG web page participant’s list. We had an opportunity to update it.
GPLNE Meeting
Report on the GPLNE meeting at Wellesley on October 5th. Betty Febo, the host, reported it was a good size group and the presentation on the Serial Set was very well received.
There was an announcement that the next meeting will be on December 7th at UNH. At that time, Linda Johnson of UNH and current chair of GPLNE will report on the meeting held in Maine of the FDLP libraries about the future of the FDLP. There will also be discussion of email reference questions. Linda is looking for ideas for a March meeting and a place to have it. The May meeting will be at UMass Amherst and deal with the Census.
FDLP Conference
FDLP Conference/Council was held in Alexandria VA October 14 –17. Betty Febo attended the APDU pre-conference on the census on Sunday and had handouts. She expressed a willingness to reproduce more if needed. She specifically mentioned a software program called ALLOCATE on which the Go2000 software is based. Go2000 software will be on the census DVD’s distributed to depository libraries. Betty had handouts on the table from the sessions she had attended as did Bette Siegel. There was positive comment on the plenary session approach this year. For the first 2 days the mornings were for all.
Gail Fithian mentioned a letter her director, Bernard Margolis, sent to Fran Buckley, the Superintendent of Documents, regarding removing documents from collections because of the "times" versus removing them because of misprints, etc. Gail will check to see if we can all have a copy of the letter.
New Structure of the Boston Library Consortium
Bette Siegel reported on her attendance at a BLC meeting held at BC on October 11th. As a co-chair of GoDIG, she was invited to attend. The BLC is being restructured. There will be Task Forces which will be focused on a specific topic, have a small group membership and have a deadline to complete their work. Directors will suggest individual staff members for individual task forces. Everyone should be aware of this and feel free to ask to be on task forces that interest them.
Then, there will be Community of Interest groups; similar to GoDIG. These will include those whose interests lead them to want/need to meet together to discuss issues of common concern. Bette explained that she told the Management Committee of the BLC that the members of GoDIG do not want to meet virtually, are willing to go out of Boston for meetings, and are interested in continuing as we are.
Barbara Preece indicated that GoDIG was the "role model" of a community of interest.**There will be a celebration of the 32 years of the BLC on January 30, 2002. The place is to be announced. It will be a SPECIAL event; all will be invited. There will be tables where one can sign up for Communities of Interest. Bette has been asked to be there to represent GoDIG. Betty Febo volunteered to assist. She is our web master and a very important part of our presentation. We will announce more information as we receive it.
Barbara Preece announced that other institutions had expressed interest in joining the BLC. She emphasized that the new re-structuring will be revisited!
State Plan
State Plan news was given by Gail Fithian. Gail has made minor changes. The Regional responsibilities have to be appended to the plan. She hopes to have this finished in the next 3 weeks. When it is finished she will repost it on the GPLNE/GoDIG web sites. She met with Dee Brennan of the Boston Regional Office about the role of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Robert Maier of the MBLC will be the contact on this.
Gail mentioned the need to add the electronic documents component to the Plan. She also said that meetings would have to be held to discuss these additions. It was felt, by Gail, that the MBLC could have the role of convener for any meetings; inviting observers, participants, etc.
Gail asked if anyone was willing to host the listserv if Harvard is not able to. UMASS and BC will ask.
Dan O’Mahony mentioned that both RI and CT had revised their plans recently. He suggested that the northeast states have their plans on a website for all. It was suggested that the current chair of GPLNE, Linda Johnson of UNH, be apprised of this.
Bette told that the Library Director of BC, Jerome, mentioned at the re-structuring meeting of the BLC that the Directors would support any change in the FDLP. The Directors were also told that they needed to sign off on the Plan.
Next GoDIG Meeting
It was agreed to have the next meeting on Friday, February 8th at Boston College.
Stat-USA
Ben Hood discussed the purchase of site licenses for Stat-USA and other libraries joining in. He was interested in which libraries would be interested. The following email from Ben summarizes institution interest in a consortial purchase of STAT-USA.

Self-Studies
Self-Studies were mentioned in the latest issue of Admin Notes. Massachusetts was on the list. Some reported that at the Conference, Robin announced they had not finished reviewing the ones they had in – house so that they were not going to do more than they could handle. Massachusetts may not be announced in January of 2002. Gail, our Regional, said she had heard nothing. Another point of information was raised that once in 14 years, the Inspector would visit your library.
Economic Census
Economic Census in paper was requested. Bette will contact John Kavaluinas of the Census Bureau to ask.
