Present: Anne Myers, (co-chair), BU Law; Sonia Ensins, Boston College; Kim Maxwell, MIT; Ralph Szymczak, Brandeis; Gail Fithian, BPL; Laura Walters, Tufts; Betty Febo, Wellesley; Bob Kehner, MIT; Len Adams, UMass Amherst; Betsey Lippmeier, BPL; Bette Siegel (co-chair), State Library.
A. Introductions
B. Depository Status
AALL Libraries are seriously considering dropping their GPO status.
1978 was the year that the law libraries “joined” the GPO family.
NELLCO directors are assessing the status of their libraries (20) and GPO.
There are approximately 41 federal depositories in MA.; with 17-18 in the Boston area.
The regional (BPL) is notified and helps with information if a library drops its status.
C. UPDATE on BPL/flood
Betsey Anderson Lippmeier is the flood expediter. This is a new position for her as she was a member of the GovDocs department. This
is a temporary position.
The federal documents have yet to be done. The insurance money was received 2 months ago. The money comes through City Hall.
Approximately 100,000 maps were sent to be freeze-dried; then they have to decide if they are usable. Some things in the collection
are irreplacable. The proposal is to buy the READEX depository set from 1991-1998 - approximately $62,000 per year. The Library has
MAJOR space problems!! Eventually, documents may have to be integrated into the main library collection. Gail is doing mostly flood
work. They can’t use the basement; this adds to the space problems. She is supervising the re-cataloging of the federal periodicals;
some going to out of site storage (available in one day or the next).
D. INSPECTIONS
All inspections are postponed indefinitely. There are 10 libraries that were to do the self-study in MA. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT
YOU NOT PUT THIS OFF, BUT DO SOME OF IT, NOW!!!
E. BLC DIRECTOR
Barbara Preece, Executive Director of the BLC was introduced. She has been at her position since May. The group explained that
they wanted to meet her and explain that we were willing to do a presentation for the BLC after the GPO conference in October.
F. STATE PLAN
Gail will send Bette the list of the depositories in MA. Bette will send a letter stating that we want to have a meeting in the Spring to
discuss a State Plan. It was suggested the meeting be held in Worcester, the middle of the State. Gail will try to get the plan on the
web for all to review prior to the meeting. Gail specifically mentioned that she should be notified if you have specific ideas/thoughts
about specific items. For example, discard lists. If you want to do your discard list on the web only, or any other way; it would be helpful
for her to know ahead of time.
G. STATISTICS
Many of the library representatives present mentioned that their statistics are down.
Tufts mentioned that for the online materials that they pay for the vendor sends monthly
reports of usage. This is one of the requirements of items purchased by the BLC/CCC.
H. POLICIES/MANUALS
BU has put its Docs Manual on its web page. Anne will send us the URL.
Wellesley’s access policies are a "work in progress”"on its web site - please feel
free to comment to Betty.
Anne described BU’s web pages vis-a-vis course info and library resource buttons at the bottom of each page. She will send us more
information. The web site is http://www.bu.edu/library/eresources/
I. FIRST GOV
There was discussion of FIRSTGOV.gov.
This is a search engine; a portal for federal government information and state
information. The site was set up by the Executive Office of the President, not
GPO.
The next GoDIG meeting will be January 19, 2001 at Boston College.
