STATE PLAN
The minutes of the State Plan meeting held at UMASS Worcester on March 30, 2001 were mailed to each library who is in the FDLP. Those present were reminded that if they did not get their minutes to contact Bette who will send them another copy. The points raised were: YOUR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY is to be sent to the Regional (Gail Fithian at BPL). There was discussion at the March meeting about the professional qualifications of the staff. The question was resolved to the satisfaction of both the professionals and non-professionals (see the minutes of the meeting). Some members present reiterated the need for the finished plan to be sent to the Documents Librarians for final review before their directors receive it so that they can answer any questions their directors may have. Bette explained that Gail intends to send the final plan to the directors with a cover letter from GPO and MBLC.
BLC PROGRAM BY GODIG
Bette read a letter she received from Janet Di Paolo who is the chair of the BLC program committee. The letter complemented the participants for their presentations: Betty Febo, Gail Fithian and Christine Turner. Members of the group present who attended complimented their colleagues.
FEDERAL DEPOSITORY COUNCIL MEETING IN SAN ANTONIO
Only 2 New England Librarians attended - one from BPL and one from Wesleyan in Connecticut. The Wesleyan librarian reported on the meeting at the GPLNE meeting on Friday, May 4th at U.R.I. Essentially, nothing new to tell…GPO is waiting for the President to appoint a new Public Printer.
CENSUS 2000
Bette explained that a full set of the P.L.94-171 maps are at UMASS Amherst; they are the set that MISER has but MISER has no place to house them. There is a full set at the Boston MISER office at One Ashburton Place (the McCormack Building), a full set that the Senate Redistricting Committee printed off on their plotter from the DVD; a full set that the House Redistricting Committee has (word has it..they paid for their set) and a full set at the State Library. There are 3 different sets of maps; 2 are for 10 years - county blocks and county tracts. One set is the VTD..voting district maps which are transient. This is what the legislature will be redrawing. The redistricting has to be done prior to the 2002 election per the referendum that the voters passed in November of 2000. Bette explained how they will be handled in the Library; a standalone computer for the CD (P.L. 94-171), a printer and map cases for the maps.YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL with the maps as they are coated and the edges produce paper cuts!
The State Library’s computer screen will have 3 icons; the official census site, MISER and the Boston Redevelopment website. Bette passed around a map from the March 23rd BOSTON GLOBE which gave information about Boston Neighborhoods. The group was in agreement that that is the information patrons want.
At the end of the meeting, the group looked at 2 of the 3 series of maps. There was general agreement that specific paper maps would have to be purchased separately; but one should wait til the end of the summer in case they are updated, etc.
FLOOD RECOVERY AT THE BPL
Betsy Anderson Lippmeier talked about the progress of the Flood Recovery at BPL.
She said that there is no backlog in the donations. She thought GOVDOCS will move to the 2nd floor of the Johnson Building, with the Science Library this summer. BPL is at the end of negotiations with READEX for deposit fiche from 1992 to 1998. They will receive one year at a time.
FUTURE MEETINGS
The group expressed its desire to continue meeting ON FRIDAYS. It was suggested to hold the next meeting after the Depository Council meeting in October (10/14 - 10/17) and not to conflict with GPLNE. Ralph volunteered Brandeis for the October meeting.
