Find journal articles

The following databases provide either full-text articles or citations (information about when and where the article was published).

Once you have an article citation,

WC = Wellesley College users only.

Google Scholar. Multidisciplinary coverage of peer-reviewed literature— journal articles, theses, books, preprints, and more. Complements, but does not replace, other databases, because GS lacks information about its breadth/depth of sources covered. Advanced Scholar Search Tips.

JSTOR, WC electronic backfiles of full-text journal articles.

  • JSTOR journals start with volume 1, and continue, but they are always several years behind the current year/volume. Use the Library Catalog to determine whether or not current years are available online, in print, or in microform at Wellesley.
  • Search term advice:
    • Be methodical--keep track of your search attempts. It may take several searches to find the most relevant articles.
    • Try the Advanced Search for more powerful searching.
    • Use the most specific term for the desired concept. Try the Latin name for an organism (e.g., tribolium).
    • Include the singular and plural forms of a search word by adding + to the end of the wordstem.
    • Select only the relevant subject clusters: Ecology, Botany, and General Science journals.
    • Publication type: select "Articles." "Reviews" in JSTOR will most often bring up book reviews.
  • Download the pdf of the article of interest before you attempt to print or save it (faster).

Biological Sciences databases (via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) WC covers life science articles from the following:

  • Agricola for all aspects of agriculture, from 1970+.
  • Biology Digest for general scientific magazines, from 1989+.
  • Biological Sciences for the major biological research journals, from 1982+.
  • BioOne for research journals in ecology, environmental science, and organismal biology, from 2000+.
  • Plant Science for plant literature, from 1996+.

PubMed a searchable worldwide database of citations and abstracts, from the 1950's onward, in all fields of medicine and biomedicine--including public health. Short tutorial is available. PubMed's Single Citation Matcher completes a partial reference that you already have. Journals Database deciphers abbreviated biomedical journal titles. PubMed search hints:

  • Use the wildcard * at the end of a word, to indicate the variable ending of the search word.
  • Limit search to desired parameters (language, research subjects--humans or animals or either, etc.). [Article title inside brackets represents a translation--of just the journal article's title--into English.]
  • Be aware that links to full-text articles are active only where Wellesley has signed license agreements or where the journals are available to readers free of charge.

Wilson Web databases WC includes several databases that cover aspects of the environment and/or horticulture. Coverage is from early 1980's for citations and abstracts. Fulltext available for some items, from early or mid-1990's+.

  • Biological and Agricultural FullText. Peer-reviewed and popular articles on all aspects of biology and agriculture.
  • General Sciences FullText. Peer-reviewed and popular articles on many aspects of general science.
  • Omni File for more complete coverage of available fulltext articles.

Science DirectWC, electronic journal articles from 150 journals in the physical, life, social, and behavioral sciences. From 1995+.

Example: Look for articles which discuss morphological or cellular differences between red and green peppers.

My search terms: red peppers, green peppers, capsicum (Latin name for peppers)

What kind of information are you after? Hint: take a look at the kinds of terms used to describe your experiment. Now make a few lists.

I'm looking for morphology or cellular structure articles.

What subject clusters or databases do you think you need?

Agricola, Biological Sciences research journals, JSTOR (different database), and maybe PubMed or Medline.

What time period do you want to cover?

Whatever is available. The particular experiments I am looking for right now are pretty basic, and may have been performed a long time ago. So JSTOR would be my first choice, because it covers the earlier scientific literature well..

What publication types? What language(s)? What JSTOR clusters?

'Articles,' -- research articles in English. Clusters: Biology, Botany, General Science.

How should you formulate your search statement? Try the Advanced Search. Be methodical and write down each search strategy you try.

Search All These Words: pepper+ red green
(+ gives you singular and plural)

Search All These Words: capsicum red green

For general searching:

InfoTrac OneFile WC (via Thomson) 1980's+ (citations / some abstracts); 1990's+ (selected full-text articles).A great place to begin broad subject searches in the sciences.

General Science Full Text (via WilsonWeb)WC for citations, abstracts, and selected full text of journal articles that cover all aspects of general science. Coverage: indexes articles from 1984 onward; full-text articles from 1990's onward. When checking off database segments to search, please include Omni Mega File as well as General Science Full Text. This will increase your chance of retrieving a whole article instead of a reference to it.

Please Note: This list above is highly selective. Other databases may be useful for you, depending on your specific topic and approach. Feel free to request an appointment with the library research liaison.
