Find journal articles

The following databases provide either full-text articles or citations (information about when and where the article was published).

  • Once you have a citation for an article, use the Find It! @ Wellesleylink from each citation to search one or more electronic journal sources through the Wellesley College Library Catalog.
  • Use the name of the journal as the title and make sure you look at the dates covered carefully!
  • If Wellesley does not own the article, you can request it via Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

Major databases:

GeoRef is the electronic bibliographic database of the American Geological Institute.

Scope: articles in journals, maps, chapters in books, conference proceedings, dissertations, and technical reports
Time Coverage: for North American documents, dates back to 1785; for the rest of the world, back to 1933
Context-sensitive 'help' screens ; see Help & Support

Science Citation Index (Web of Science)

Scope: i nterdisciplinary subject searching of scholarly articles in the physical, life, and social sciences.
Citation searching: search for articles that cite known journal articles or books.
Un-select the box for Social Science Citation Index
Time Coverage: from 1965+

Science Direct

Scope: Indexes more than 2,000 journals Full text (= green icon) for about 150 scientific journals
Time Coverage: from 1995+

Google Scholar

Scope: multidisciplinary coverage of peer-reviewed literature— journal articles, theses, books, preprints, and more

**Remember, you must evaluate web resources you find with a search engine the same way you would evaluate print sources.

  1. Who is the author of the information?
  2. Can you find information about the author?
  3. How current is the information? Is there a "last updated" date?
  4. Who is the intended audience for the information?
  5. Is the content objective or is it coming from a certain viewpoint?
  6. Is the information advocating a cause?
