Find Books

WorldCat (via FirstSearch platform)
WC OCLC catalog of books, journals, manuscripts, etc. available in libraries worldwide. Covers works 1000 B.C.E.-present.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service from which you can request a journal article (book, book chapter, technical report, etc.) that is not available at Wellesley in any format.

  • Obtain the whole journal article without charge.
  • Normal delivery time is about 1-3 weekdays to receive journal article, a little longer for other formats. Occasionally takes longer if the item is held by few libraries, or the request is placed before a holiday weekend.
  • You do not have to tell the system where to find the item... that is done via ILLIAD.

    Requirements:

    • Available to members of the Wellesley College community (student, faculty, staff)
    • One-time free registration on ILLIAD supplies your contact information and preferences to the Interlibrary Loan staff. The ILLIAD system draws upon the holdings of up to 9,000 libraries worldwide.

    NExpress and ILLIAD:

    • NExpress, a quicker, more local component of interlibrary loan (group of New England libraries).
    • NExpress request form shows up inside button 'Find it at Wellesley' when Wellesley does not own the desired item.
    • The two systems complement each other.
      • If NExpress cannot find an item, it transfers the request to ILLIAD, without your needing to intervene.
      • However, to make this occasional transfer smoothly, the Interlibrary Loan office requires that you be registered on ILLIAD.

Find Articles and Essays

The following databases provide either full-text articles or citations (information about when and where the article was published).
Once you have an article citation,

  • Use the Find It! @ Wellesley link from each citation to reach one or more electronic journal sources or perform a search in the Wellesley College Library Catalog.
  • If Wellesley does not own the title, you can request it via Interlibrary Loan (ILL)WC. (For ILL, see more detail under 'Find Books')

    Start with any of these:

InfoTrac OneFile WC (via Thomson). Coverage is 1980's onward, for citations and some abstracts; 1990's onward for selected online articles. Contains scholarly/peer-reviewed/refereed and popular articles covering sports, physiology, health and society, medical ethics, and related issues. Fulltext available for some items, from early to mid-1990's onward.

Wilson Web databases WC includes several databases that cover relevant aspects of sportsmedicine. Coverage is from early 1980's for citations and abstracts. Fulltext available for some items, from early to mid-1990's onward. Select these databases: General Sciences FullText, Omni Fulltext MegaFile, and Social Sciences FullText.

PsycINFO WC (via EBSCO Host) contains citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books and dissertations, in psychology and related fields. Searching PsycINFO for Sports and Leisure Topics lists almost fifty potential topics which are covered in this database and relevant for your project or paper.

If you want/need more depth, try these databases.

PubMed indexes articles in all fields of medicine and biomedicine, with abstracts, from the 1950's onward. Links to additional resources (encyclopedia, drug information, etc.) from the National Library of Medicine. PubMed Basics brochure. Short Tutorial.

Web of Science WC , also known as Science Citation Index Expanded, is very useful in performing interdisciplinary subject searches, from 1965+. Also identifies newer articles, written in 1965 onward, which cite certain authors or key papers from any time period. NOTE: When you finish your session, please be sure to logout.

Other databases may be useful for you, depending on your specific topic and approach. AskUs for some customized suggestions, or feel free to contact the library research liaison for an appointment. Neil Nero, Science Librarians, are happy to help you with your searching.
