Oxford Dictionary of Islam WC edited by John L. Esposito, has 2,500 up-to-date and authoritative entries, focusing mainly on 19th and 20th century developments. It provides a look at the religious, political, and social spheres of the modern Islamic world.

Virtual Religion Index has links to about 50 Web pages, sites, & portals, with General Resources, Muhammad, Oral Tradition (Hadith), Law (Shari'ah) as just some of the headings. Besides the large number of articles and essays, there are speeches & translated texts that can be useful for more serious research.

Concise Oxford Dictionary of Archeology WC by Timothy C. Darvill is an Oxford Reference Online title with over 4000 entries. It covers essential vocabulary for archeological work and focuses especially on Europe, the Old World, and the Americas.

Oxford Companion to Archeology WC by Editor-in-Chief, Brian Fagan, features 700 articles. Topics include biographies of figures in this field, methods used in archeological research, and essays on human evolution, as well as the general facets of culture.

LexisNexis Academic WC LexisNexis is a full-text database of newspapers and magazine articles (including business and legal information). Choose News, then either General News or World News. Use this source for fairly current events as some newspapers and magazines go back only to the mid-1970's at the earliest, and most only go back to the 1980's and 1990's.

Literature Resource Center WC
Biographies, bibliographies and full-text critical analysis of authors from all genres and eras, including the contents of Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Literary Criticism.

MLA International Bibliography WC is an excellent resource for topics dealing with literature, linguistics, film, folklore.

PAIS Public Affairs Information Service WC features articles about political, social, economic issues, & public affairs.

Periodicals Index Online WC(formerly Periodicals Contents Index/PCI) is an index to articles published in over 4,500 periodicals, in as many as 40 languages, and covering topics in the humanities and social sciences.

New York Times Online WC, a ProQuest historical product, has exact replicas of the newspaper, in PDF format & graphics, from 1851-2001.

Official Index to the Times of London is an index to articles printed in the Times of London Newspaper dating back as far as 1785. This index is located in several different areas depending on the date. 1785-1789 (Ref AI 21 .T46); 1790-1905 (Microfiche filed under Palmer's Index); 1906-1913 (Microfilm filed under Times Index); 1914-1927 (Clapp Ref AI 21 .T46); 1928-present (Clapp Ref ).

Poole's Index to Periodical Literature lists articles in popular periodicals from 1802-1906 (Clapp Ref AI 3 .P7 1938).

Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature is an index to popular magazines dating back to 1907 (Clapp Ref).

Grove Art Online WC has a section (#49) on Islamic Art, as well as articles on fine, decorative arts, architecture & more. The text is searchable.

Islamic Arts & Architecture has information on Arabic calligraphy, architecture, including the Taj Mahal, coins, Oriental rugs, an international listings of museums with Arabic and Islamic exhibits, & an FAQ section.[Much of the site can only be viewed with the Internet Explorer (IE) browser.]

Grove Music Online WC has articles on Islamic religious music, music censorship in Afghanistan, Arab folk instruments, etc. There are, also, sound clips & links to other sites.

Selections of Arabic, Persian, & Ottoman Calligraphy is a Global Gateway site of the Library of Congress & contains copies of 373 Arabic sheets on paper or parchment ranging from the 9th-19th centuries.

Internet links

Al-Islam.org is a site maintained by the Ahlul Bayt Digital Islamic Library Project (DILP) with information that can be accessed in English, Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, & Italian. The user can click on features like "Most Popular Links," plus a "Discover Islam" section, "Explore Shi'a Sunni," "Unity Between Shi'a & Sunni," and "Browse Library" with subject coverage in various media formats.

Arab News is the online home for the first daily English newspaper in Saudi Arabia. Features come from Europe, America, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and other Middle Eastern countries. The archives section goes back to January 4, 2001.

ArabicNews.com is a news site providing an Arabic viewpoint on Middle Eastern events. News is presented in English by country or topic. The editions are published 6 days a week & archived back to June, 1997.

History in the News: The Middle East provides links to by resources for the study of the Middle East.

Index of /maps/middle_east_and_asia is a University of Texas site with variously titled maps from this region of the world.

Maghrebi Studies is an updated site dealing with "Maghrebi" art and culture, with a focus on literature, cinema, & music that traces its origins back to the three African countries colonized by France --- Algeria, Morocco, & Tunisia. Rachid Aadnani, a faculty member of our Middle Eastern Studies Program, is a contributing member to the site.

Middle East Daily covers business, politics, science, the environment, and sports and provides access from other World News outlets.

Middle East Institute "promote[s] knowledge of the Middle East in America & strengthen[s] understanding of the United States by the people & governments of the region."

Middle East Research & Information Project (MERIP) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in Washington, DC, 32 years ago. It provides a broad range of perspectives not usually found in mainstream media and press coverage. The Middle East Report is not available for free on the site (though some editorial pieces are), but users can look at the Middle East Report Online, and there is a feature that allows interested parties to sign up & receive the online reports via email.

Middle East Studies Institute/School of International & Public Affairs/Columbia University offers a multidisciplinary approach to studying the Middle East & functions as a clearinghouse for information on the region. Unique features include contact information for small, obscure publishing houses (Bookstore & Publishers heading), a listing of Middle East scholars (Middle East Scholarly Association), documents on researching Middle East topics on the Internet, & archived lectures on topical themes, including Iran, Israeli, & Palestinian nationalism.

MIT Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies is an internet-based journal "publishing scholarly writing --- both interdisciplinary work & work within the traditional boundaries of the social sciences & humanities --- related to the modern Middle East. It is published bi-annually and its book & media reviews are posted year round."

Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life [pdf] "seeks to promote a deeper understanding of issues at the intersection of religion & public affairs." The Forum focuses on religion & politics, religion & the law, and religion & world affairs. Check the left-hand side of the homepage for transcripts of recent events, survey resluts, and Pew's press room.

SAUDINF explains the role of women in Saudi Arabian society.

War with Iraq: Costs, Consequences, & Alternatives is a pdf file presenting views held by the five contributors: Carl Kaysen, Steven E. Miller, Martin B. Malin, William D. Nordhaus, & John D. Steinbruner.
