Find books

Wellesley College Library catalog - Use the Library catalog to find books and other materials (journal titles, NOT journal articles) we have here at Wellesley. Remember to start with "keyword" if you are beginning to research a topic. Try putting in "business" as a "subject" to see the books we have on business and its various sub-categories.

WorldCat - Use WorldCat to find books, journal titles (NOT individual articles), and other materials that are not in the Wellesley Library catalog. If you need something that Wellesley does not own, use the ILL (Interlibrary Loan) link within WorldCat to request the item.

Find company information 

Note: Information about private companies is very limited as they are not required to submit annual reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

DealBook [NY Times.com] - financial news and analysis covering mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, initial public offerings, private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, legal matters, and related topics.

LexisNexis Academic Business - Company profiles, financial reports, SEC filings, country and industry economic analysis and statistics. Some 5-yr company statistics downloadable to Excel. Some basic information on private companies. Content from Hoover's is contained in Lexis/Nexis.

Mergent Online - U.S. and international company data, company archives, and annual reports; historical stock prices (20 yrs+); and industry reports. Search by company name, ticker symbol, or SIC code. Most data downloadable to Excel.

Thomas Register - search for companies by product, company, or brand name. Has businesses by sex and race.

CNN Money - company profiles, stock quotes, charts, and current news articles.

Yahoo Finance and Google Finance - use this to find historical stock prices. Search by ticker symbol.

Find commodity information 

Chicago Board of Trade - leading futures and options on futures trading exchange. Learn how to trade futures.

Commodity Futures Trading Commission - a U.S. government independent agency created to protect market users and the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to the sale of commodity and financial futures and options.

Commodity Research Bureau and the CRB Commodity Yearbook (also Clapp Ref HF1041 .C56).

Find industry information 

Most industry information is classified by product according to Standard Industrial Classification code (SIC). Since NAFTA, North America uses the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the rest of the world uses the International Standard Industrial Classification code. When searching for company information, you may search using the 4-digit SIC code.

Mergent Online has 25-30 pages reports on industries in various regions of the world.

Industry Forecasts - Arranged by SIC code, provides sources for industry overviews, issues and trends, industry outlooks and forecasts, financial benchmarks, and compensation surveys.

Current Industrial Reports [U.S. Census Bureau] - monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity. Browse by subject or by NAICS subsector.

Economic Census of the U.S. profiles American business every 5 years, from the national to the local level and business programs from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Mineral industry surveys - monthly, quarterly, and annual stats on production, distribution, stocks, and consumption of significant mineral commodities

Dow Jones Indexes - worldwide links to stock exchanges.

Global Business Cycle Indicators [Conference Board] - leading, coincident, and lagging indexes for U.S., Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the U.K.

New York Stock Exchange - Look in the Fact Book (on bottom bar) and the Data Library (under market information).

Standard and Poor's Global Indices - descriptions of worldwide indices.

Women and Business 

Center for Women's Business Research is the "premier source of knowledge about women business owners and their enterprises worldwide". Has national, state, metropolitan, and minority statistics.

National Women's Business Council "is a bi-partisan federal advisory council created to serve as an independent source of advice and policy recommendations to the President, Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration on economic issues of importance to women business owners."

International Business 

GlobalEdge [Center for International Business Education and Research at Michigan State University] - links to international stock exchanges, resource directory, and current information on the business climate, news, history, political structure, economic landscape, and relevant statistical data for 196 countries

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

United States Council for International Business - gives businesses a voice to influence laws, rules and policies that may undermine U.S. competitiveness, wherever they may be.

E-Commerce 

E-Business Forum from the Economist Intelligence Unit - analysis and forecasts of the political, economic, and business environments in more than 180 countries.

MIT Center for eBusiness - links to working papers and research briefs.

Bankruptcy Basics and bankruptcy statistics [U.S. Courts]

BEOnline Plus [Library of Congress] - links to all things business.

Big Charts - provides access to stock quotes, industry analysis, market news, and commentary. Provides stock information back to 1985 in the form of charts and graphs, not raw data. Has annoying pop-up ads.

BizStats.com - many reports listed have a fee attached, but there are some unique statistics available; Sales per Foot & Sales per Store - Retailers, and you can choose a business category, enter a sales revenue number, and see what the expenses should be for a company in that industry with that sales amount.

Business Ethics from the University of Illinois; articles, publications, case studies, corporate codes of ethics, and professional organizations and associations.

Business Forecasts from the Financial Forecast Center - Stock and equity, money rates, exchange rates, and economic indicators forecasts for the next 6 months. Also contains historical data.

Conference Board: Consumer Confidence - press release on monthly consumer confidence index. The consumer confidence data is available only to members.

Federal Reserve Board of Governors and the Federal Reserve System.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission provides oversight of the securities industry. Maintains the EDGAR database of mandated company reports.

Environment-Friendly/Socially Responsible

Socially Responsible Investing - comprehensive information, contacts, and resources on socially responsible investing. 

Green Money Journal - articles back to 2000.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development - coalition of 170 international companies united by a shared commitment to sustainable development.
