histories". Has a useful "Contents by Era" index in the beginning of
vol. 1.

The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics. Clapp Ref

Describes concepts and theories important in the field of economics. Over
700 brief biographies of important economists. Each article lists additional
sources of information. Indexes in the back of vol. 4 list biographies
and entries by author contained in Dictionary of Political Economy
ed. by Palgrave published in 1925.

Yearly summaries of the economic condition of individual member countries
of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Has a statistical

Published yearly by the Economist Intelligence Unit, United Kingdom,
it forecasts political and economic trends in over 180 countries.
Very brief
explanatory paragraphs + statistics such as GDP, CPI.

have a citation for an article, use the Find
It! @ Wellesley link
from each citation to search one or more electronic journal sources through
the Wellesley College Library Catalog. Use the name of the journal as
the title and make sure you look at the dates covered carefully! If Wellesley
does not own the article, you can request it via Interlibrary
Loan (ILL).
EconLit is
the electronic bibliographic database of the American Economic Association.
This database indexes books over 60 pages, articles in journals (1969+),
chapters in books, conference proceedings, dissertations (1987+),
book reviews (9/1994+) and selected working papers (1984+).
JSTOR collection

Online archive of core journals in Economics, Demographics, Political
Science. Journals can be browsed or searched by keyword. (Adobe Acrobat

Working Papers -
The National Bureau of Economic Research is a private, nonprofit,
nonpartisan research organization founded in 1920. The working papers
are written by leading scholars in their particular fields. The papers
may be searched by keyword or browsed by NBER Program. In many cases,
the full text may be viewed using Adobe Acrobat.
PAIS [Public
Affairs Information Service] - articles about political, social & economic
issues, public affairs. Citations to articles from 1915 onward. Use
the Infobridge link to find the full-text.
RGE Monitor -
ahead-of-the-curve information on global economic and geostrategic issues.

Wall
Street Journal Online -
full text (text only) from Jan. 2, 1984 onward. For stock quotes, charts,
and graphs, you must look at the original newspaper.

- Statistical Abstract of the United States. Clapp Docs
HA 202 A2 (1878-) The current
year is available as tables downloadable
to Excel. Also online from
1878 as .pdf images.
Published by the U.S. Census Bureau, the place to start for
state and national statistics of all kinds. Each table lists the source
of
the
data. State Statistical abstracts available here.
- U.S. Economic Census - Clapp Library has a print
set of the U.S. Economic Census conducted every 5 years. Also available online from
1997.
- Historical
Statistics of the United States -
U.S. statistics from over 1000 sources. All tables downloadable as
.csv and .xls; create customized tables and spreadsheets. Mostly
national, not much state data.
- Beige
Book - Published 8 times a year by the Federal Reserve Board,
provides a summary of commentary on current economic conditions
by Federal Reserve District. 1996 onward.
- CPI
Calculation Machine. Compare values of goods and services for
any selected years. Tables with information on the Consumer Price
Index and Inflation Rates from 1913 onward are also available.
- EconData Net -
A comprehensive first stop for relevant state and substate socioeconomic
data. Sponsored by the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
- Economagic - More than
100,000 time series useful for economic research. The core data sets
involve data for the entire U.S. but the bulk of the data is employment
data by local area.
- Economic forecasts from the Livingston
Survey.
- Economic Report of the
President - An annual overview of the US economy, the site
includes the narrative portions and statistical tables of Economic
Reports from 1995 onward. Reports from 1997 onward can be downloaded
into spreadsheets. We have print copies from 1950 onward at Clapp
Docs HC 106.5 .A272
- Economic Statistics
Briefing Room - A collection of links to current Federal economic
indicators. Includes data for production, sales, orders, output,
income, unemployment, prices, money, credit and interest rates.
- The Minimum
Wage - This U.S. Dept. of Labor site provides information about
the minimum wage, tracks the history of changes in the minimum
wage, and compares the actual wage and its relative value over
time. Scroll down the main page to see minimum wage laws by state.
- Smart Library on
Urban Poverty - Online library of summaries and analyses of
selected research on urban poverty and joblessness. Sponsored by
the National Institute of Social Science Information.
- US Bureau of Economic Analysis -
An overview of the US economy based on estimates of national accounts

- Poverty
Monitoring Database - Produced by the World Bank and part of
a comprehensive PovertyNet site. Has country statistics for monitoring
poverty levels.
- The UN has several regioinal economic commissions:

on agriculture, trade, development, corruption, and other issues.
- World Economic Forum - "Incorporated
as a foundation in 1971, and based in Geneva, Switzerland, the World
Economic Forum is impartial
and not-for-profit; it is tied to no political, partisan or national

- World Trade Organization - Resources
