Find articles and essays

The following databases provide either full-text articles or citations (information about when and where the article was published).

Once you have an article citation,

Wilson Web databases WC includes several databases that cover relevant aspects of the geosciences. Coverage is from early 1980's for citations and abstracts. Fulltext available for some items, from early to mid-1990's onward. For all available coverage, select

  • General Science FullText
  • Omni Fulltext MegaFile
  • Education FullText (if you are interested in geosciences education)

InfoTrac OneFile WC (via Thomson) 1980's+ (citations / some abstracts); 1990's+ (selected full-text articles).A great place to begin broad subject searches in the sciences.

GeoRef (via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) WC, from the American Geological Institute, is the major source for deeper coverage of geological literature. AGI provides citations and selected abstracts. SFX links to electronic full-text when Wellesley College has negotiated license agreements with certain publishers, or when items are available free of charge.

  • Materials indexed: journal articles, books, technical reports, theses, maps, and more.
  • Time period covered: varies with the continent.
    • North American geology indexing goes back to 1785.
    • Geology of other parts of the world go back to 1933.
  • Advanced features include online GeoRef Thesaurus, the ability to save search history, and option to request automatic alerts.

Google Scholar. Multidisciplinary coverage of peer-reviewed literature— journal articles, theses, books, preprints, and more. Complements, but does not replace, searching in other databases, because of its unspecified time coverage and breadth/depth of sources.. Advanced Scholar Search Tips.

Science Direct WC Searchable database of electronic journal articles from 150 subscribed journals in the physical, life, social, and behavioral sciences. Subscribed journal titles have a green icon.1995+.

Science.gov is a gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by twelve U.S. government agencies. See the section, Earth and Ocean Sciences, for coverage of geology and landforms, meteorology, water and hydrology, oceanography, mapping, and more.

Web of Science WC is very useful in performing interdisciplinary subject searches from 1965+. Also identifies newer articles, written in year 1965 and beyond, which cite certain authors or key papers from any time period. IMPORTANT: When you finish your session, be sure to Logout.

Full-text Journals:

GeoScienceWorld WC for peer-reviewed electronic journal articles, from more than thirty journals in the earth sciences.

JSTOR WC for electronic journal articles, from selected peer-reviewed journals in general science, ecology, botany, and other scholarly disciplines, from volume one onward, but not including the most recent few years. [JSTOR = electronic journal-storage].

  • Individual articles are viewable and printable with Acrobat Reader.
  • Select appropriate subject clusters of journals for searching with desired terms.
  • Try out JSTOR's Advanced Search feature.

Publications Warehouse. Includes electronic full-text publications such as the USGS Bulletins, Circulars, Open File Reports, Professional Papers and more.

Science Direct WC, for electronic journal articles from more than 125 subscribed journals in the physical, life, social, and behavioral sciences, published by Elsevier and affiliated publishers. Subscribed journal titles have a green icon, and are available full-text, from 1995 onward.
