Encyclopedia of Conflict Resolution. Clapp Ref HM 136 B783 1997.
Entries include concepts such as conflict and dispute, escalation, interests, positions, and conflict resolution techniques. Confrontations from two party personal relationships to super-power confrontations are discussed.

Encyclopedia of Conflicts Since World War II. Clapp Ref D 843 E46 1999 4 vols.
Discusses the roots of war, various alliances and summit meetings meant to forestall conflict, and the background and events connected with numerous specific conflicts since World War II. Entries have lists of further sources.

Encyclopedia of Espionage, Intelligence, and Security. 2004. The history, uses, scientific principles, and technologies of espionage, intelligence, and security, with special emphasis placed on the current ethical, legal, and social issues.

Encyclopedia of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity. 2005. The Encyclopedia spans the globe to explain the issues behind crimes against humanity and human rights issues as they relate to individual countries and the world at large. It traces the history of events that qualify as genocide and crimes against humanity, profiles perpetrators and heroes, and explains international laws and law proceedings aimed at ending genocide and crimes against humanity. International Conflict: A Chronological Encyclopedia of Conflicts and their Management 1945-1995. Clapp Ref D 842 B46 1997.
Introductory chapters on understanding and managing international conflict; then brief articles on specific conflicts. Extensive references.

Find articles and essays

The following databases provide either full-text articles or citations (information about when and where the article was published). Once you have a citation for an article, use Find It! @ Wellesleyto link to the full text of the article or go to the record in our library catalog to see if we might have the journal in print. Make sure you look at the dates covered carefully! If Wellesley does not own the article, you can request it via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). See our A-Z list for additional databases. Think of which database will have the information for the approach you want and don't forget to check the coverage dates of the database to make sure the time period you need is covered.

Web of Science (and Social Science)- 1965+. Interdisciplinary subject searching of scholarly articles in the social, physical, and life sciences. Search for articles that cite known journal articles or books.

Organizations and Groups for Advocacy and Awareness

  • Americans for Peace Now - "founded to...build an informed and empowered pro-peace American public." Explains the relationship of Americans for Peace Now to the Israeli group, Shalom Achshav (Peace Now), and offers news, position papers, and Peace Links, which includes a range of Israeli Web sites promoting peace.
  • Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are two prominent NGOs whose sites offer current information on human rights and documentation of their respective campaigns and actions.
  • Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is a private non-profit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation among nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States.
  • The Carter Center - In partnership with Emory University, is guided by a fundamental commitment to human rights and the alleviation of human suffering; it seeks to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy, and improve health.
  • Democracy Now! - National, daily, independent, award-winning [radio and television] news program airing on over 140 stations in North America." Hosted by award-winning journalists, Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez, the program covers news and public affairs. The War and Peace Report offers news and commentary on the invasion of Iraq, North Korea, the United Nations, and related topics.
  • The Global Fund for Women is an international organization focusing on the rights of women. Issues of concern include domestic violence, literacy, economic development, and international trafficking in women.
  • Global Policy Forum - "monitors policy making at the United Nations, promotes accountability of global decisions, educates and mobilizes for global citizen participation, and advocates on vital issues of international peace and justice".
  • International Crisis Group - working to prevent conflict worldwide.
  • Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe [OSCE] - world's largest regional security organization. Contains official records, publications, fact sheets, news releases, and maps.
  • Physicians for Global Survival is a physician-led organization committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons, the prevention of war, the promotion of non-violent means of conflict resolution and social justice in a sustainable world.
  • Social Development and World Peace from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Catholic viewpoint of world policy issues. The site provides documents, legislative news, action alerts, and other links to social teaching.
  • War Resisters League - founded in 1923, their mission states "The War Resisters League affirms that all war is a crime against humanity. We therefore are determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive nonviolently for the removal of all causes of war."
