Access Services provides the Circulation and Interlibrary Loan services of the Library.

There are no specific requirements to apply for any position; however, students must be willing to be trained over the course of a year in a wide variety of tasks. Accuracy and attention to detail are vital, and students must have the ability to work unsupervised. Knowledge of a foreign language is helpful in Interlibrary Loan positions, as well as familiarity with online catalogs, fax machine, email, and the physical layout of the Library. Flexible work hours are a plus.

Access Services - Circulation Student Job Requirements:

Excellent communication skills and a desire to help others; accuracy and attention to detail; prior Library experience and knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification System is welcome but not required.

Circulation Assistant B: Shelve, shift and maintain materials in the Library stacks according to the Library of Congress cataloging system. Assist patrons searching for materials; answer general informational questions; explain basic Library policies. Use online catalog proficiently. Will receive training in other specific Library skills.

Circulation Assistant C: Perform all the tasks listed for Circulation Assistant B, especially stack maintenance, as well as the following functions: assume responsibility for Circulation service desk when staff is otherwise engaged, especially evenings and weekends; assist in training new students; update records in library patron database; participate in special projects.

Expected Time Commitment: Average: 8-10 hours per week, flexible according to Staff schedule. Students are expected to work through reading periods and finals. Wintersession and Summer hours also available.

Working Hours: All of the hours the Library is open, including evenings and weekends, depending on Staff need.

Access Services - ILL Student Job Requirements:

Interlibrary Loan Assistant B: Use the Wellesley College Library online catalog to verify our Library's holdings; retrieve library materials from the shelves at Clapp and departmental libraries; assist in maintenance of the database; photocopy or scan via Ariel / FAX items as specified on ILL request forms; prepare, wrap and ship materials for mailing; verify BLC journal holdings against online BLC Union List of Serials; use Clio software for statistical files and generating reports.

Interlibrary Loan Assistant C: All duties required for Level B, as well as the following: search for materials using more advanced online catalog searching techniques; notify patrons of arrival of material via phone, email or FAX; assist in file maintenance, and other tasks as needed.

Working Hours: flexible hours up to 10 per week. Summer: Full and Part time available.
