Job description for level D
Learn techniques to repair and treat items from our circulating collections. Techniques are in accordance with book conservation best practices. Treatments include the housing of brittle books; hinge tightening; photocopying replacement pages for damaged items; sewing pamphlets into binders; repairing of paper with Japanese tissue; recasing with new or old boards; rebacking; spine repairs. Possibility of some computer work (Excel, Word, III). Assist the supervisor as needed. A high degree of proficiency in the techniques learned is expected, as is the ability to work independently and efficiently. You will gain a basic understanding of the underlying principles of book conservation and their applications. Good judgement is essential. Excellent hand skills are required, as is the ability to concentrate and perform detail-oriented tasks. Precision is important. You will work with very sharp tools such as scalpels and paper cutters. The position also requires that you are able to lift rolls of book cloth and to safely use a 40-inch board shear. You will receive instruction in the proper use of this and other equipment.
