WELLESLEY COLLEGE

The Journal as Artist's Book
An exhibition from
a Wintersession Workshop

In January 1998 fourteen people met for six classes in the Book Arts Lab of the Margaret Clapp Library to explore the creation of journals as artists' books. Guided by Marilyn Hatch and inspired by her Round Ghost Ranch: a Panoramic Journal, fourteen very different books emerged by the end of the session. Several appear here.

Marilyn A. Hatch, Book Arts Instructor

Round Ghost Ranch; a Panoramic Journal
Paste paper covers with a drypoint etching invite the reader into an accordion of high desert landscapes in color photocopy, etching, and paste papers with handwritten text remembering a week of creativity in New Mexico.

Jill Bent, Assistant in Special Collections.

Travels in Turkey.
This accordion book recounts the artist’s trip to Turkey. Color photocopies, watercolor paintings, sketches, and handwritten text are combined on paste paper designed to represent the Turkish landscape, architecture and culture. The book is hardbound in paste paper with a cloth spine.

Charlotte White, Library Staff Retired

Prince Edward Island.
This journal records the highlights of the artist's trip to Prince Edward Island with color photocopies on paste-paper pages cut in the shape of the island. The text is hand written, and the book is bound with ribbon sewn in a side-stab format.

Debra A. Carbarnes, Member, Friends of the Library

FragmentsTokyo 1984.
This artist’s book in an accordion format with sewn-in sections evokes a visit to Japan using Poloroid transfer prints, found objects, hand-written text, and rubber stamps on paste papers…all bound in hard covers with a fan-like paste paper pattern.

Jennifer Schurer, Class of 2000

The artist made this photo-memoir album for her best friend of almost eight years. The book consists of a carousel of three layers of photocopied images--pictures of the artist and her friend on the first layer, pictures of their friends on the next, and a collage of tickets, pictures, and images which hold special meaning for them both on the third. The rest of the text pages are on hand-decorated paste papers with embossed rubber-stamped words. Each page has picture edge cut-outs so that more images may be added...and toward the end of the book a paste paper envelope is bound in for more mementos. The whole is enclosed in blue paper covers with a side stab binding.

Jiasuey Hsu, Class of 2000

Across the universe…
This book combines drypoint etchings, photographs, a pressed maple leaf, and paste paper in a complex folded format housed in a paste-paper covered, hardcover binding with cloth spine.

Joan Collier, Member, Friends of the Library

My life as an artist.
Joan combines many lives in this book! Calligrapher, journal keeper, printmaker, landscape designer, photographer, oil and acrylics painter, and book artist…all on paste papers and Japanese papers using photocopy transfer for text and as a design element. The accordion format with sewn-in sections is hard bound in handmade paper with a cloth spine.

  Josye Utick, Class of 1998

This book was made to commemorate the artist's traveling experience with her exceptional friend, Ruth MacQuiddy. Two copies were made, one for each, in order to cherish their trip to Prague in August of 1997.

The shape of the book was inspired by the dominating landmark of Prague, the Charles Bridge, which extends over the river that divides the city. The pages of the book represent the banks of the river and the insert extending thoughout the book represents the Charles bridge. Thus the images on one side of this accordion-style book correspond with one bank; the images on the other side with the opposite bank. And the insert serves as the format on which a stream of consciousness of events experienced in Prague are embossed.

The book is bound in hard covers surfaced with paste paper made by the artist and tied with an inserted ribbon. The images were transferred from black-and-white and color photocopies, photographs were drymounted over the transfers, and embossed text was added.

Sue Leong, Library Staff

A Photographic Memoir.
A journal in memory of Kelly. The artist has combined color photocopies, rubber-stamped text, collage and decorative paper punching on paste paper, all bound with red ribbon in a side-stab binding.

Dorothy Widmayer, Faculty Emerita

The Bareboat Sail. Puerto Rico and The Starlight Express. November 17 to December 4, 1997
Dot Widmayer's travel journal sings in paste paper colors of tropical reds and blues and greens and starry skies. Color photocopies of photographs, maps, collaged ephemera, schools of reef fish, computer generated text all contribute to the feeling that we are there in the Caribbean.

 Eleanor B. Webster, Faculty Emerita

A collage of images from
Color and Contrast: Glimpses of the Caribbean.
"This book is one of the journals of journeys created by members of a January 1998 Book Arts Workshop under the direction of Marilyn Hatch. This journey started in Boston on a dark snowy morning, Monday, November 17, 1997, with a flight to Puerto Rico. The first glimpse was of sparkling blue sea beyond the coast of New San Juan crowded with high-rise luxury hotels. After three days of exploring Old San Juan, we flew to Beef Island Airport on Tortola for two weeks of sailing in the Virgin Islands." (From the Foreword)

Eleanor’s accordion-fold book includes photographs, color photocopies, memorabilia and maps on paste-paper backgrounds as well as Canson Mi-Tientes and other art papers.

Elizabeth Graettinger, Class of 1998

Betta has used multiple-folded pages, color and black-and-white photocopies, clippings, hand-written text, and ribbon lacing to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake for a special friend.
