Margaret Clapp Library![]() |
The Margaret Clapp Library is the largest library on the Wellesley College campus. The collections housed here focus on the humanities and social sciences. Additionally, there are a number of separate collections such as the College Archives, U.S. Government and international documents, and also Special Collections maintaining rare books and materials of unusual research value in literature, history, Africana Studies, and book arts.
The Office of the Vice President for Information Services and College Librarian is located on the second floor near the main entrance. The Knapp Media & Technology Center which consolidates course support services (including course reserves), media services, and language laboratory facilities is located on the first floor. The Knapp Center provides facilities and equipment for instructional technology and multimedia production. The original Margaret Clapp Library building (left), was erected in 1909 with the help of funds from Andrew Carnegie, and is still recognizable on the main floor in the entryway and in the central room of the Reference area. The 1909 building as well as additions and renovations in 1957 and 1975 was designed by the Boston architectural firm of Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbott. In 1975, the library was named for Wellesley's eighth president whose portrait hangs over the fireplace in the main Reference area of Clapp Library. |
