The Wellesley College Library Mission Statement
Wellesley College exists to provide a superior liberal arts education to women of diverse backgrounds. The College draws upon the strengths and dynamism of its faculty and staff to prepare students for roles as free, responsible, and thoughtful citizens of a complex world. The Library, fully engaged in this collaborative educational process, creates intellectual partnerships with the students, faculty, and staff who learn from one another in this community.
Guided at all times by the commitment to serve Wellesley College, the Library shall :
1. Acquire materials in appropriate formats and in sufficient quantity, depth, and diversity to support teaching and basic research in the subject areas of the curriculum.
2. Organize collections logically, making materials available for use in a timely, efficient manner.
3. Assure equitable, unbiased access for the Wellesley College community to the Library's collections and services.
4. Provide expert guidance to readers in the identification, interpretation, and use of library materials and information.
5. Prepare students for life-long learning by teaching library skills necessary for self-education and independent scholarly pursuit.
6. Provide the expertise necessary to support the development, preservation, and security of the collections.
7. House collections in surroundings conducive to their use and preservation.
8. Respond to the changing state of knowledge and the curriculum by continually evaluating collections and services, implementing change as appropriate.
9. Establish and maintain cooperative agreements for resource sharing with other libraries.
10. Facilitate access to local, national, and international information resources.
11. Ensure the preservation and availability of official records and other materials which document the history of Wellesley College.
12. Recruit and retain a highly qualified, effective, and numerically sufficient staff.
13. Motivate library staff to high levels of achievement, encouraging continuing development and skill enhancement.
14. Uphold the American Library Association's "Library Bill of Rights."
