Welcome to Research and Instruction at Wellesley!

The Research and Instruction Group (RIG) consists of staff working in the Clapp and Science Libraries, Special Collections, the Book Arts Lab, and the Faculty-Staff Computing Helpdesk. We help the College community with research questions and teach library instruction sessions, courses in the history of the book, and book arts workshops. We now have a new Clapp student run reference desk for any questions about software or creating the best powerpoint presentation. No question is too silly or trivial. We're here to help -- at a reference desk, in your office, or in our offices; by email, on the phone, or in person. Although any of us can help you get started with your research, we do have expertise in specific subject areas. It's no secret that the most successful students at Wellesley are those who know how to navigate the world of information -- from ancient manuscripts to blogs!

Request a Library Instruction Session

Faculty, have you been satisfied with your students' research papers? Get better papers from your students and eliminate plagiarism by scheduling a library instruction session tailored to your class. Contact the appropriate subject specialist to discuss the research needs of your students. We have found that an instruction session will be most effective if it is taught at the time that your students will begin their research--whether it be in the first month of the semester or the last few weeks. Please contact us as you are preparing your syllabus, and at least one week in advance; that way we can tailor our teaching to the particular needs of your class. Writing 125 insructors can expect their students to learn these competencies and instruction sessions in general (except for Special Collections) include the following:
  • how to find the appropriate resources for a topic
  • how to broaden or narrow a search
  • how to find the right search terms to use
  • the difference between a "popular magazine and a "scholarly" journal
  • the advantages of searching a Wellesley-subscribed database
  • how to find primary source material
  • when it is appropriate to search Google

Research librarians can also help you structure a better assignment and confirm for you that your students will indeed have access to the information they need to complete the assignment.

Special Collections encourages faculty members to schedule a class visit. Students always enjoy a chance to see original editions of texts they are reading, and they will learn something about the history of the book as well.

While the Book Arts Lab does not schedule traditional library instruction sessions, workshops are held throughout the year in which students can learn the basics of typography, letterpress printing, hand bookbinding, hand papermaking and decorated papers techniques.
