Student Research at Wellesley
One way to explore mathematics more deeply is to experience real mathematical research. You can learn some mathematics outside the classroom and get a sense of what it’s like to be a mathematician. The chance to focus on a single—previously unsolved—problem is exciting, challenging, rewarding and quite different from the experience of learning within a course.

We especially recommend a research experience for those students considering graduate school in mathematics. In recent years several students have done mathematical research here at Wellesley College.

Some sample student projects include circle packing and discrete analytic functions, a comprehensive study of discrete isothermic surfaces in 3-space, a mathematical model of tumor growth, and financial derivatives: options and markets.

Wellesley College students can apply for a stipend through the Science Center. In addition, some students are funded through a faculty member’s Brachman Hoffman small grant.

Research during the Summer of 2005
Four students spent the Summer 2005 doing mathematics research here at Wellesley College, while four others attended NSF REU programs at other sites (including one international student funded by Wellesley College). Another student attended the George Washington University Summer Program for Women in Mathematics. We also recommend The Carleton College Summer Mathematics Program for Women for students who are not quite ready for research but are ready for math immersion.
