Math
Help Room:
Every
Sunday through Thursday from 7 to 9 pm, student tutors (who have already
taken Math 205 or more) are on hand in the Department Common Room,
SCI 362, to answer questions and help students with homework problems
in calculus and some other courses. The Help Room sessions begin the
second week of each semester: for Fall 2007 that is Sunday, September 9.

Math Review Sessions:
At
the beginning of each fall semester, the Math Department offers
free, informal "minicourses" designed to cover basic mathematics
for use in calculus and other quantitative courses. Everyone is welcome
to
come to any or all of the sessions. One of the sessions,
designed for students in Calculus II, will review material
from Calculus I.
The
instructors for Fall 2007 are Profs. Horton, Shultz, and Trenk.
In
Fall 2007, these minicourses will meet 12:30 - 1:20 in
SCI 364.
Handouts
are available at the class sessions or from
the
Math
Department
Office in SCI 361 or in the Mathematics
conference on FirstClass. Copies of the handouts may also be available
on reserve
in the Science Library.
Students
who need more help with basic math should also contact Corri Taylor
or Jessica Polito in the Quantitative Reasoning
Department.

Resources in the Department
Department
Office: The
Math Department Office, wonderfully staffed by Ms. Melanie Chamberlin,
is located in SCI 361. This is one place to look for information
about
summer work and research opportunities, actuarial opportunities, and
graduate
school information.
Common room (SCI
362): SCI
362 is the Department Common Room. Whenever it's not
being used for a
Department event, the Common Room is available to students
for study or discussion. If you're looking for someone to talk mathematics
with, the Common Room is one place to try. This room is
also used
in the evenings as the Math Help Room.
Lending
Library: If
you're looking for some additional practice problems or
another perspective on a concept you're having trouble with, try
browsing this informal
lending library. In
the hall outside the Common Room you'll find several bookcases
of mathematics textbooks. These books are available for student
use.
Just sign a book out on the list posted at the end of the
bookcase to borrow it, and then cross off your name when you return
the book.
Many of the books are calculus texts, but there are also
books on linear algebra, differential equations, and more.
The Mathematics Computer Laboratory (SCI
257):
Outfitted
with Macintosh computers, the computer lab is open all day and evening
most days, and the computers are available for students to use whenever
the lab is not being used for a class. Each of the computers is equipped
with Mathematica and Joy
of Mathematica,
as well as a variety of other software.
Science
Library:
The
Science Library is a wonderful resource. Explore it for suggested
alternative texts, for popular mathematics books, or biographies
of famous mathematicians. Don't miss out on their webpage
of interesting mathematics
sources.
