Why do we study
mathematics?
Mathematics has a fascinating dual nature. Many study it as an object
of endless beauty, interest and intellectual challenge, while others
are motivated by its applications to real-world problems. Increasingly,
mathematics is an essential tool for modeling phenomena in the
physical, biological and social sciences. Mathematical literacy is the
key to surviving and thriving in the world of technology. At its heart,
mathematics is the study of patterns: it is a creative art as well as a
science. |

The importance of mathematics at Wellesley
Mathematics has always been a part of the liberal arts core at
Wellesley College. One way our students continue this tradition is by
combining mathematics with a minor or a double major in another field
such as Economics, English, Classics or Chemistry. Mathematics is
excellent preparation for a lifetime of discovering, learning, and
applying new knowledge.

Alumna Gift and
Math Bootcamp
Alumna
Virginia Menz Clark ’62
recently established an endowed fund for the Mathematics Department,
with the income designated to promote mathematics at Wellesley
College, especially in meeting needs that are particular
to mathematics. It helps support student travel to
mathematics conferences,
faculty research, and
innovative teaching. In the summer of 2007 the Clark Fund helped support
our "math bootcamp": a four-week intensive program in pure mathematics, organized
by Professors Volic and Chang and designed to
provide strong preparation for graduate school in mathematics. Four Wellesley
students/alumnae participated in the 2007 program.
