News and Announcements: Fall 2009
Wellesley's Mathematics Department consists of 15
faculty members with a broad range of research interests in pure and applied mathematics. For all our students, we offer personal attention in
advising and in small classes. Our mathematics majors, which number 15-20
per academic year, benefit from a well-developed curriculum that is both
rigorous and inclusive. They have been highly successful securing
positions in research, finance and education. We currently have
alumnae in mathematics graduate programs at Cornell, Dartmouth,
UC Santa Barbara, the University of Wisconsin,
Arizona State, UMass Amherst, Wesleyan University
and the University of Hawaii.
Tenure-track jobWellesley has a position for a tenure-track job to start Fall 2010. We are accepting job applications on mathjobs.org until December 1, 2009. Candidates in any field of mathematics with strong records in teaching, research, and mentorship are encouraged to apply. For more information, please see our full job advertisement here. Martha Davenport Heard Lecture
We will kick off the semester with the eighth annual Martha Davenport Heard Lecture on November 13, 2009. This
year we are looking forward to hearing from
Francis Su from Harvard Mudd College.
Title: Voting in Agreeable Socities Abstract: When do majorities exist? How does the geometry of the political spectrum influence the outcome? What does mathematics have to say about how people behave? When mathematical objects have a social interpretation, the associated theorems have social applications. We give examples of situations where sets model preferences, and show how extensions of classical theorems on convex sets can be used in the analysis of voting in "agreeable" societies. This talk also features research with undergraduates. This talk is designed to be accessible to a general audience while also being of interest to advanced math majors. All mathematics majors and minors are invited to join Mathematics Department faculty at a banquet dinner with t he speaker following the talk.
Mathematics Genealogy of our FacultyThe advisorial lineage of our tenure-track faculty members can be seen on our bulletin board outside of Sci 356. Come and find out which professor is advisorially linked to Moebius! To Fermat! To Copernicus!
