CHAMBER MUSIC FOR CREDIT - MUSIC 250H

The procedures and expectations of the chamber music program are the same for all our musicians, whether participating for credit or not. In order to receive credit, however, the expectations, as defined here, must be fully met.

QUALIFICATIONS: As with other ensembles, students working in a group for credit must be considered by the coach to be at the 199 level. They should take, have taken, or have exempted Music 111. If 111 was exempted, they should take any other course in the department. These co-requisites should be taken during or before the first year of 250H. No further academic music courses will be required.

CREDIT: The Music Department gives .5 credit PER YEAR for ensembles.

DURATION: This is a year’s commitment though the ensemble might change at the end of the semester.

GRADING: This course is given on a credit/non-credit basis.

EVALUATION: At the end of each semester, evaluation will be made at a public performance attended by two Music Department faculty members.

ATTENDANCE: There will be 10 coaching sessions each semester of one hour each, with possible extra sessions close to performances. Participants are expected to attend them all.

ABSENCES: Students are required to attend all ten coachings. Illness is the only possible excuse for an absence. Since each group learns optimally as a complete unit, we can allow only two absences per semester. Should more than two absences occur in a semester, we would still want a student to remain in the group; the rest of the group would need that person to continue. However, credit for the year would be relinquished. THIS WOULD NOT APPEAR ON A TRANSCRIPT. We expect participants to treat this a as regular class. Should a review session be scheduled at a coaching time, the player should advise the professor that she has another class scheduled at that time.

INDEPENDENT REHEARSALS: In addition to regular attendance at coaching sessions, participants are required to hold weekly independent rehearsals. Parts must be prepared outside of rehearsals.
