Ensemble

Collegium Musicum December
10, 2003: Ordo Virtutum
The vocal ensemble is a flexible
group depending on the period and repertory explored.
Sometimes taking the form of a women’s
schola, sometimes functioning as an SATB choir
with the aid of male singers from the community
and area schools, the vocal ensemble explores
a wide repertoire of styles, as well as the historical
vocal techniques and pronunciations appropriate
to each repertoire. More advanced singers will
have opportunities for solo and one-to-a-part
singing.
The Vocal Ensemble rehearses on Mondays from 7 - 9 p.m.

The
viol consort offers instruction and playing experience for beginning
to advanced players. Students needing instruments have access to the
fine chest of viols in the Department’s collection. Rehearsal times
are worked out with those participating. In March of 2003, the viol consort
performed a recital of music by William Byrd. Future performing opportunities
include playing for school functions and in collaboration with the voices
and recorders in the semester’s collegium programs.

Lute

The
lute, older cousin of the guitar, is a
versatile and lovely instrument that was
popular from the 15th through the 18th
centuries. It is an effective instrument
for playing solo repertory or combined
with voices and soft instruments. The school
owns a lovely 6-course lute that is available
for use. Guitar faculty Glorianne Colver,
also an accomplished lutenist, offers private
lessons and coaching on this fine instrument.
