Synergy Jazz String Ensemble

Welcome to the Synergy Jazz String Ensemble
homepage! The Synergy Jazz String Ensemble is a faculty-directed jazz
ensemble for string players (violin, viola, cello, acoustic bass) at
Wellesley College
that focuses on developing jazz improvisation skills, including specific
techniques for bowed strings. Students will learn by ear as well as
well as with written music and recordings. Repertoire includes jazz string
ensemble arrangements by the Turtle Island String Quartet and
compositions for strings with rhythm section, in styles from rock to
Latin jazz.
Quick Facts about Synergy
- Rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 P.M. with a
professional jazz pianist.
- Performs at least four times a year with accompanist or
jazz trio.
- Members participate in improvisation clinics with professional
jazz/ fusion string players.
- Can be taken for 0.5 credit (full year committment).
- Auditions every semester and by appointment. Improvisation
experience is welcome, but not necessary. Students should be prepared
to play a scale and a piece of their choice (in any style). Contact
