Highlighting New Alumna
Morgan Carberry

This fall, as she embarked on the first year of her two-year Marshall Scholarship—the prestigious fellowship which funds cultural and intellectual exchange in the UK—Morgan Carberry was one of just 40 US scholars selected for the award. She is a student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, where she is pursuing a Master of Performance degree in Musical Theatre—a degree offered nowhere else. One of a tiny class of 12 students, she is the first American ever accepted into the academy in its thirty-plus-year history.
“The most thrilling thing” about this opportunity, Morgan says, “is that I've gotten funding to pursue my passion.” [more]

Alumnae Overtones
We’re very happy to launch the first edition of Alumnae Overtones, providing news, updates, and photos that offer a glimpse into the personal and professional lives of the department’s alumnae. Some alums continued their musical education into graduate school and pursued musical careers, and others have taken different paths—such as into business, technology, or medicine—while maintaining the musical connection in their lives. We hope that this will be the first of many installments of a forum providing the expanding network of Wellesley women with a musical connection. [more]

Jazz/World Music Expands
This year there has been a dynamic shift in the Jazz/World Music Program. With new classes, ensembles, performance opportunities, and a new program director, its programming, importance, and visibility are expanding in the department and on campus. Playing a key role in these changes is the recently-appointed Program Director, saxophonist Cercie Miller, who works with the faculty as they coordinate their activities more closely to create a “Jazz Umbrella,” with shared concerts, workshops, and master classes. Faculty Doings
The members of the Music Department faculty play active roles in the local, national, and international musical world. They perform in a tremendous variety of venues and styles, lead master classes, present lectures and papers, make recordings, write books and articles, adjudicate competitions, and earn honors, fellowships, and awards. The following recounts some of their recent and upcoming activities. (Hekun Wu, at left) [more]
