Jan Pfeiffer

 

Field of Study: Co-director, Chamber Music Society

Education: University of Southern California and the New England Conservatory, studying cello with Gabor Rejto, Ronald Leonard, and Laurence Lesser; chamber music with Eugene Lehner, Louis Krasner and Robert Koff, and studies with Harvey Shapiro at the Juilliard School. The first holder of the Emanuel Feuermann Cello Chair with the National Orchestra of New York and the first recipient of the Claus Adam Award.

Biographical Information: Founder and director of the Lavazza Chamber Ensemble. Performs with the Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Ballet, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic. A concerto soloist in Carnegie Hall, she has toured Italy with Musicisti Americani, and been featured on Charles Kuralt’s CBS program “On the Road.” She is a frequent performer of contemporary music; John Carbon, Simon Andrews, and John McDonald have written pieces for her; Jan has played with Alea III and New England Conservatory’s Enchanted Music Circle. Her recital and solo appearances have taken her across the United States and to Italy, and include recitals at Lincoln Center and the New England Conservatory. She has performed chamber music with Michael Tilson Thomas, members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Hung Kuan Chen.

Professional Affiliations: Teaches and coaches at Boston College, All Newton Music School, and in her home studio. Co-director of the Chamber Music Society of Wellesley College and the director of the Chamber Music Center of the Composers Conference at Wellesley College. Her cello is a Santino Lavazza, made in Milan in 1751.
