Resident Fellows

2006-2007 Fellows

2007-2008 Fellows

2008-2009 Fellows

2009-2010 Fellows

The Newhouse Center for the Humanities will host ten or eleven resident fellows for the academic year 2010-11. Residencies are ordinarily for the full academic year, but one-semester residencies can also be considered. Resident fellows will devote themselves primarily to their own research, but will also participate actively in the intellectual life of the institution, participating in programming and events as appropriate, sharing their work in progress, and serving, if they choose, as mentors to student research assistants. Beginning in 2010-11, Newhouse Faculty Fellows will be given the opportunity to work with the Director to design a program in which to present his/her work to the larger community while in residence - e.g. short lecture series, interdisciplinary panel, min-conference, etc.

There are several categories of resident fellowship at the Newhouse Center. Some fellows arrive here through different application procedures from those described on this page. Newhouse Mellon Postdoctoral fellowship, for instance, are advertised by the academic departments that are authorized by the Dean of the College to offer them in a given year. The Mary L. Cornille Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Humanities is also a separately administered program. Wellesley College Fellows will be chosen from Wellesley faculty members on sabbatical leave. Faculty members in all humanities departments are eligible, as well as other faculty members whose current research is humanistic in character. Wellesley College fellows may be in residence for either one or two semesters. During the term of their residencies, they will ordinarily vacate their departmental offices in order to work primarily at the Newhouse Center and to participate fully in its programs.

Newhouse Faculty Fellows: Newhouse Faculty Fellows are chosen through open competition, as described below, and are open to both junior and senior faculty members at other institutions. Both stipended and un-stipended fellowships are available. Stipended Faculty Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,000 for two semesters, in addition to the research funds described below. In addition, limited funds may be available to assist with the costs of moving and relocation. Although the Newhouse Center cannot provide housing, Wellesley College apartments may be available. No fringe benefits are provided, and it is expected that external faculty fellows will combine their Newhouse Center stipends with support from other granting agencies or their home institutions. For fellows who have adequate support from their home institutions or elsewhere, un-stipended residencies at the Newhouse Center are available. All other benefits of residency, including office space, research funds, possible access to housing, and the resources of the college at large, are available to un-stipended fellows of the Newhouse Center. Those who wish to apply for un-stipended residencies should follow the regular application process for external faculty fellows, described below.

For all categories of fellows, the Newhouse Center will make available private office space, some clerical support, technical and computing resources, and the collegiality of both the Center and the Wellesley community at large. In addition, research funds of up to $3,000 (pro-rated for one-semester residencies) will be available to all fellows for books, professional travel, access to collections and other associated costs of scholarly research. In cases of exceptional need, additional research support funds may be available.

Applicants for Newhouse Faculty Fellowships should submit by December 1, 2009 1) a research proposal of no more than 1250 words, describing the project and plan of research for the proposed residency; a brief bibliography may be appended; 2) a brief description of a broa
d programming vision in which to present his/her work while in residence; 3) a curriculum vitae; 4) the names and contact information of three referees, and 5) a cover letter that makes clear the applicant’s reasons for wishing to work at the Newhouse Center and that also makes clear whether the applicant is willing to be considered for an unstipended as well as a stipended fellowship.

Applicants should contact recommenders directly and ask them to submit their letters by the December 1 deadline.

Applicants will be notified by early March, 2010 whether or not they have received a fellowship.
Applications can be submitted by regular mail to The Newhouse Center for the Humanities, Wellesley College, 106 Central St. Wellesley MA 02481-8203; or by email to nch@wellesley.edu.
