La Fac

All courses in Aix are conducted entirely by professors from the Université de Provence (La Fac = la faculté d'Aix en Provence).

In Aix, students are free to choose any course at the university that interests them and meets the requirements of their major, though we strongly recommend that students select at least a few of their courses from among the program’s core offerings (see below). Students who need conspicuously to improve their language skills will be required to take the program’s intensive grammar review and stylistics course, Atelier de langue orale et écrite. Wellesley students who wish to fulfill the department’s translation requirement are advised to take the translation course that is offered each semester at Aix. (This semester-long course is the equivalent of French 308 at Wellesley.)

COURS DE BASE, COURS DE SOUTIEN
All course selections are made in consultation with the director of the program. (For a sampling of courses taken in recent years by Wellesley-in-Aix students, click here.) Each year a number of core courses (cours de base) are selected by the program from the university’s curriculum. These pre-selected courses in art, literature, history and the social sciences enable our students to have a supplementary hour of group instruction (cours de soutien) with their University of Provence professors.

Courses for the core program are finalized once each department at the university has officially announced its course offerings for the coming year. The core courses for 2008-2009 were:

  • Atelier de langue orale et écrite
  • Traduction
  • Terres d'Orient
  • Histoire de l’art au XIXème siècle
  • Lectures de textes du Moyen-Age
