Wellesley College faculty members are involved with study abroad in a variety of ways. Most advise students on study abroad programs and courses, and many lead short term trips during Wintersession or the summer, or serve as Resident Directors for semester- or year-long programs. Faculty also serve on the International Study Committee and the International Safety Committee or conduct site visits of current or potential program sites. Faculty involvement is key to the success of the Wellesley study abroad program, and this site aims to provide faculty members with resources that will help them in this important work.

RESOURCES FOR ADVISORS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS
Students who plan to study abroad during their junior year will be required to declare a major by the end of the first semester of their sophomore year in order to ensure that they have a departmental home, and an appropriate advisor, before they leave campus for a semester or a year. Students are strongly encouraged to discuss their study abroad plans with their academic advisor and others in their major department, to get advice about programs that might be particularly good for their course of study or, more generally, about the types of courses that they should pursue while they are abroad. Wellesley offers a number of study abroad programs and approves many more. The complete list is available by clicking here. In addition, students may request special permission to attend programs that are not already approved, if these are recommended by their advisor or another faculty member who knows the student and the program well. Faculty members who are familiar with programs that they believe to be particularly strong are invited to contact the Office of
International Studies so that these may be considered for the Approved Programs List.

At Wellesley, it is the department chair, or his or her designee, who determines whether or not courses taken in approved study abroad programs will count for credit toward the major or minor or will fulfill a distribution requirement. This approval can be recorded in several ways:

  • Transfer of Credit Form: This form, available on line or in the Office of the Registrar, allows students to have major or minor courses approved in advance of or during their time abroad, and is also used to indicate approval for distribution credits or for 300-level requirements. Part one of the form is completed by the student, part two by the Director of International Study and part three by the relevant department chair or chair's designate.
  • Major/Minor Confirmation Form: Students who return from study abroad with senior standing will list courses to be counted toward the major or minor on the major/minor confirmation form. They do not need to submit a Transfer of Credit form as well.
  • Some departments will opt to approve a certain number of courses in advance to eliminate the need to approve the same course for multiple students. Department chairs who are interested in this option may contact the OIS to get copies of course descriptions for selected study abroad destinations.

For more information on study abroad policies and procedures, faculty members may wish to consult the Study Abroad Primer (for students considering study abroad) and the Study Abroad Handbook (for students who have already been accepted to a study abroad program).

RESOURCES FOR FACULTY LEADING SHORT TERM STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS The Office of International Studies is pleased to offer support for faculty members who develop and lead short-term international study programs. Please click here to access the Faculty Handbook for Short Term International Study.

INTERNATIONAL STUDY COMMITTEE
The International Study Committee (a Committee of Academic Council) is composed of six faculty members who are elected to three-year terms by Academic Council, the Director of International Study, the Dean of the College or his designee and one Class Dean from the Division of Student Life. The Committee is charged with the oversight of the College's study abroad program, specifically the approval of study abroad programs for Wellesley credit and a systematic review of programs that have been approved in the past. In addition, the committee considers policies relating to study abroad and makes recommendations as appropriate. The committee is also responsible for the selection of students for study abroad programs with an internal review process and for scholarship funding which is not part of the regular financial aid package. For a list of current committee members, click here.

OIS-SPONSORED FACULTY TRAVEL
The Office of International Studies encourages faculty members to visit study abroad program sites that may be appropriate for their students and is able to fund a number of these visits each year. Faculty members who are interested in having a first-hand look at one of the College's approved programs
, or in investigating other study abroad opportunities, in conjunction with other travel or as a stand-alone trip, should contact the OIS for more information.

FACULTY EXCHANGE
The Office of International Study is happy to work with faculty members who are interested in pursuing short- or long-term exchange with a college or university located in another country. Faculty members interested in such an opportunity should make and appointment with the Director of International Study to discuss.
