All students who study abroad for credit during the academic year pay regular Wellesley College tuition and remain eligible for Wellesley
financial aid. Students who normally receive financial aid will remain eligible for
aid to cover tuition, room and board, travel and personal expenses (based
on estimates provided by the host university or study abroad program).
Families should apply for financial aid according to the normal financial
aid schedule, available here. Some students may wish to apply for additional funding for
study abroad through one of the following scholarship programs:

Provide funding to sophomores or juniors for a 4 to 10 month period in Germany
for study, research or an internship during the German academic year.
The BUTEX Scholarship
Deadline: 1st August 2009, details for 2010-2011 will become available in January 2010
The Scholarship is open to all undergraduate students currently registered at an institution in the USA or Canada. To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place at a UK university which is BUTEX affiliated. Your study abroad or exchange place must be for the academic year 2010/11 and your place must be for a minimum of one semester. If you are not sure whether your host institution is BUTEX affiliated, please see our List Of BUTEX Members.
The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
To apply please complete the Application Form available on the BUTEX website. Applications should be submitted to the BUTEX Secretariat. Applications can be submitted by post, fax or e-mail attachment.
Winners will be notified by the end of September. Only successful applicants will be notified. The decision of the BUTEX selection committee is final and BUTEX will not enter into correspondence with unsuccessful applicants.
King's College London Excellence Scholarship
Deadline: May 31 for Fall start-dates and November 1 for Spring start-dates
For students planning to study abroad at King's College, University of London. Starting on 1 January 2009, five students per semester will receive a ‘King’s Excellence Award’, each worth £ 2,500 for students studying one semester, or £3,500 for students studying at King’s for the whole academic year. Applicants do not have to have received an offer of admission before they apply and can submit a scholarship application at the time of application, or after submission; it must however reach us by the deadline for consideration. The awards are currently merit based and the application consists of a personal statement (in addition to application statement) which should outline how and why they have decided to come to King’s. They will need to explain their reasoning behind their course choices, both in terms of current course of study at the home institution and their long term personal and academic goals. They will also need to submit a coversheet.
The Lois Pattision de Menil '60 Research Fellowship for European Study
A stipend of $2,500 to be awarded to a student pursuing thesis research in Europe during the summer between her junior and senior year. To be eligible for the Research Fellowship, a thesis must deal with a topic squarely within the field of modern European history, politics or economics. The intention of the fellowship is to award students with demonstrated interest, including necessary language proficiency and backgrounds in European subjects, and a record of outstanding academic achievement the maximum freedom to plot a course and explore natural curiosity in a focused context.
Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships Program Competition

Students at participating universities are encouraged to apply through the campus Churchill representative. The Winston Churchill Foundation sponsors scholarships for excellent scientists to conduct graduate-level study in the sciences at Churchill College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1963, there are currently twelve one-year awards offered to those who want to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics by pursuing original, creative work at an advanced level. Applicants for a Churchill Scholarship must be citizens of the United States. Every candidate must be a senior enrolled in one of the institutions participating in the Scholarship Program competition OR a student who has recently graduated from one of those institutions. Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan

The US-Japan Bridging Foundation offers 65 scholarships annually
to assist undergraduate students to study in Japan. Undergraduate
students, who are U.S.
citizens, majoring in any field are eligible to apply for
these scholarships. Japanese language is not a prerequisite.
Huayu Enrichment Scholarship for Mandarin language study in Taiwan
Deadline: Feb 1- March 31 each year
This scholarship sponsored by the Cultural Division of Taipei's Economic & Cultural Office provides a monthly stipend for students pursuing Mandarin language studies in a language school or university.
Mayling Soong Scholarship
Deadline: March 13, 2009; application deadline for 2010-2011 not yet set
Mayling Soong scholarships support the study of Chinese in China and Taiwan, Japanese in Japan, and Korean in Korea and South Asian languages in South Asia. Applicants for summer study grants must have completed one year of language study at Wellesley and include a recommendation letter from their language instructor at Wellesley with the application. Monbusho Scholarships
Deadline: March
The Monbusho Japanese Studies award is offered by the Japanese government. The award is designed for undergraduate students who are specializing in Japanese language or culture and wish to pursue their studies in Japan. The term of stay is one academic year, beginning in September or October and ending the following year. All applicants are required to take a Japanese language examination and complete an interview. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, between the ages of 18 and 29, and must be undergraduate students studying Japanese language or culture at an institution outside of Japan. Applicants should have knowledge of the Japanese language. Grant includes round trip airfare, exemption from all school fees, arrival allowance of 25,000 yen and a stipend of 142,500 yen per month. The Killam Fellowships Program

The Killiam Fellowships program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students to study in Canada for a semester or year. All Killam Fellows receive a cash award of $10,000 for the year or $5,000 for the semester. More information is available here.
Non-Traditional Destinations
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Deadline: October 6, 2009 (Spring 2010)
This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad,
for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant
funding at a
2-year or 4-year college or university. Selected by competition,
recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated
with studying abroad. Students studying a Critical Need Language may receive a $3,000 supplement for a total possible award of $8,000.
The Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology
Deadline: April 15 of the academic year prior to enrollment, All awards will be announced in May.
Study Egyptology in the land of the Pharaohs for one or two semesters at the American University of Cairo (AUC). Simpson Scholarships are available to outstanding students of all nationalities who are of junior or senior standing in a college or university oustide of Egypt at the time they apply. Simpson Scholarships provide an award of $2500 per semester to undergraduate students who enroll in the study abroad program at AUC and wish to concentrate their studies in Egyptology. Diversity Abroad will offer twenty, $1,000 scholarships for fall 2008, spring 2009 and summer 2009 study abroad. Six scholarship are available for the fall, six for the spring and eight for the summer. Scholarships are only available for students studying or interning abroad on programs offered by a Diversity Abroad member organization (including DIS). Michael P. Metcalf Memorial Award (for travel, enrichment, and public service)

Open to legal residents of Rhode Island in their freshmen, sophomore or junior year of college. The fund provides grants to college students to subsidize experiences intended to broaden their perspective and enhance personal growth. They may include travel in this country and abroad and a variety of internship and public service programs. Traditional programs and those that are a regular part of the student's curriculum of his/her institution's offerings- such as a sponsored junior year abroad or a departmentallly sponsored summer research program- will not be funded. Enrichment experiences for which students will received college credit(s) would not qualify for funding. Numerous awards of up to $5,000 will be given.
Institute for International Public Policy
Open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in their sophomore year of college who are part of an underrepresented minority and have a strong interest in a career in international affairs. The IIPP Fellowship program provides students with specially designed education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a multi-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study, complemented by career development services along the way. Funding per fellow is approximately $70,000.
Thomas Pickering Scholarship

Open to U.S. citizen students enrolled in their sophomore year of college at their time of application interested in pursuing a Foreign Service career with the U.S. Department of State.
The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study. Each year’s award also includes reimbursement for books and for travel (one round trip per academic year, up to a set maximum amount). The Fellow must commit to pursuing a master’s degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools participating in the program. Participating graduate schools provide financial support in the second year of graduate study based on need.
Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship Program
Deadline: February 13, 2009
Open to US citizens in the senior year of their undergraduate study with a G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher preparing to enter graduate programs in international affairs and committed to a career in the U.S. Foreign Service. Summer enrichment program open to students who will be juniors and seniors.

Boston University

Non-Boston University students are eligible to apply for grants and scholarships for any full-year, fall, spring, or summer program offered by Boston University International Programs. Grants and scholarships are awarded based on both need and merit. The dollar amounts vary and typically range from $300 to $3,000, depending on the student’s circumstances and the cost of the program.
CIEE
Deadline: April 1 (summer, fall and academic year programs), November 1 (winter, spring and calendar year programs)
Each year CIEE awards scholarships and grants to students who plan to study overseas. Competition for the CIEE scholarships and grants is keen and the quality of the materials submitted is very important. The scholarship application procedure is entirely independent from the CIEE program application.
DIS (Danish Insitute for Study Abroad)
Deadline: May 15 for fall, November 15 for Spring, April 15 fo summer
The DIS Board has allocated scholarship funds for students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark. Four types of scholarships are offered, all awarded on the basis of financial need. The DIS Scholarship, consisting of grants in the range of $500-1,000 per semester plus a small number of $2,000 grants. The maximum summer scholarship is usually $500. The DIS Work Scholarship of $400 per semester (2009/2010) ; the Knud Helm-Erichsen Scholarship of $500 - $2,000; the Mary Dau Scholarship of $500 - $2,000.
IFSA- Butler
Deadline: The scholarship application deadlines are two weeks prior to the program application deadlines. Please submit your scholarship application at the same time as your program application.
IFSA-Butler annually gives over $1,000,000 in financial awards
to students enrolling in Institute for Study Abroad Programs.
In addition to the general

IES offers merit-based scholarships of up to $3,000
to students enrolling in IES-sponsored programs. IES also offers need based scholarships of up to $1,500.
SFS (School for Field Studies)
Deadline: You must submit the SFS financial aid application within 10 days of acceptance to an SFS program.
The School for Field Studies (SFS) awards over $180,000 in need-based scholarships each year. SFS greatly appreciates the support of our alumni and other generous donors who make this possible through their contributions to the SFS general scholarship fund and individual named scholarships.
SIT (School for International Training)
Deadline: Application will not be reviewed until you have been accepted for admission. May 15 for fall, November 1 for Spring
About one-third of those who seek scholarships from SIT Study Abroad receive financial assistance to participate in our programs. Awards generally range from $500 to $5,000. Financial need is a primary consideration for all of our scholarship decisions.
