All students who study abroad for credit during the academic year pay regular Wellesley College tuition and remain eligible for Wellesley financial aid. Students who normally receive financial aid will remain eligible for aid to cover tuition, room and board, travel and personal expenses (based on estimates provided by the host university or study abroad program). Families should apply for financial aid according to the normal financial aid schedule, available here. Some students may wish to apply for additional funding for study abroad through one of the following scholarship programs:

For study in Europe, North America, Asia, Non-Traditional Destinations, for Summer study abroad or through a specific Program Provider.

Europe

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarships
Deadline: January 31, 2008 (2008-09 academic year).
Provide funding to sophomores or juniors for a 4 to 10 month period in Germany for study, research or an internship during the German academic year.

The BUTEX Scholarship
Deadline: September 1, 2008 (2008-09 academic year)
To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad or exchange student at a UK university which is a member of BUTEX. The value of each scholarship is US $1,000 and will be paid to the recipients once they have arrived and registered at their host university. Payment will be made to a UK bank account in the sterling equivalent of $1000. Please see the BUTEX website for the application.

The Lois Pattision de Menil '60 Research Fellowship for European Study
A stipend of $2,500 to be awarded to a student pursuing thesis research in Europe during the summer between her junior and senior year. To be eligible for the Research Fellowship, a thesis must deal with a topic squarely within the field of modern European history, politics or economics. The intention of the fellowship is to award students with demonstrated interest, including necessary language proficiency and backgrounds in European subjects, and a record of outstanding academic achievement the maximum freedom to plot a course and explore natural curiosity in a focused context.

Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships Program Competition
Deadline: November 12, 2007
Students at participating universities are encouraged to apply through the campus Churchill representative. The Winston Churchill Foundation sponsors scholarships for excellent scientists to conduct graduate-level study in the sciences at Churchill College at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1963, there are currently twelve one-year awards offered to those who want to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics by pursuing original, creative work at an advanced level. Applicants for a Churchill Scholarship must be citizens of the United States. Every candidate must be a senior enrolled in one of the institutions participating in the Scholarship Program competition OR a student who has recently graduated from one of those institutions. The deadline for nominated applications to be submitted by campus representatives to the Churchill Scholarship Program is November 12, 2007. Asia

Freeman-ASIA Awards for Study in East and Southeast Asia
Deadline: April 12, 2008 (Fall & Academic Year 2008-09), March 5, 2008 (Summer 2008), October 2008 (Spring 2009)
The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. Deadline: October 18, 2006 (Spring 2007); March 7, 2007 (Summer 2007); April 4, 2007 (Fall 2007 or 2007-08 academic year).

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
Deadline: April 7, 2008 (Fall 2008)
The US-Japan Bridging Foundation offers 65 scholarships annually to assist undergraduate students to study in Japan. Undergraduate students, who are U.S. citizens, majoring in any field are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language is not a prerequisite.

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship for Mandarin language study in Taiwan
This scholarship sponsored by the Cultural Division of Taipei's Economic & Cultural Office provides a monthly stipend for students pursuing Mandarin language studies in a language school or university.

Mayling Soong Scholarship
Deadline: April 13, 2007 (Summer 2007)
Mayling Soong scholarships support the study of Chinese in China and Taiwan, Japanese in Japan, and Korean in Korea. Applicants for summer study grants must have completed one year of language study at Wellesley and include a recommendation letter from their language instructor at Wellesley with the application. All forms are attached. For more information, please go to First Class under "Wellesley Conferences" and "Committees." The deadline is April 13, 2007. Please post a hard copy to Eve Zimmerman, EALL, through campus mail. All applications must be in Eve Zimmerman's office mailbox, PNW 315, by Friday, April 13, 2007.

Non-Traditional Destinations

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Deadline: April 15, 2008 (Fall 08 & Full Year 08-09), October 7, 2008 (Spring 2009)
This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Selected by competition, recipients are awarded up to $5000 to defray the costs associated with studying abroad. Students studying a Critical Need Language may receive a $3,000 supplement for a total possible award of $8,000.

National Security Education Program- Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
Campus Deadline: December 2007; National Deadline: February 12, 2008
Created in 1991, the NSEP awards Boren Scholarships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the NIS, and the Middle East..

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
Deadline: Varies by local Rotary Club, but could be as early as 18-months prior to the proposed semester or year abroad. Academic year 2008-09 deadlines start March 1, 2007.
Support study abroad at a university in any country in which there is a Rotary Club. Wellesley students contact either their home town or Wellesley, Massachusetts Rotary Club to determine application procedures.

U.S. Fulbright Student Program
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Michael P. Metcalf Award (for travel, enrichment, and public service)
Open to legal residents of Rhode Island in their f
reshmen, sophomore or junior year of college. The fund provides grants to college students to subsidize experiences intended to broaden their perspective and enhance personal growth. They may include travel in this country and abroad and a variety of internship and public service programs. Traditional programs and those that are a regular part of the student's curriculum of his/her institution's offerings- such as a sponsored junior year abroad or a departmentallly sponsored summer research program- will not be funded. Enrichment experiences for which students will received college credit(s) would not qualify for funding. Numerous awards of up to $5,000 will be given.

Institute for International Public Policy  
Open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents in their sophomore year of college who are part of an underrepresented minority and have a strong interest in a career in international affairs.
The IIPP Fellowship program provides students with specially designed education and training experiences critical to entry and advancement in international affairs careers. Students are recruited from across the nation and apply as sophomores to participate in a multi-year sequence of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, and graduate study, complemented by career development services along the way.
Funding per fellow is approximately $70,000.

Thomas Pickering Scholarship
Open to U.S. citizen students enrolled in their sophomore year of college at their time of application interested in pursuing a Foreign Service career with the U.S. Department of State. The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy
. The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study. Each year’s award also includes reimbursement for books and for travel (one round trip per academic year, up to a set maximum amount). The Fellow must commit to pursuing a master’s degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools participating in the program. Participating graduate schools provide financial support in the second year of graduate study based on need.

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship Program
Open to US citizens in the senior year of their undergraduate study with a G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher preparing to enter graduate programs in international affairs and committed to a career in the U.S. Foreign Service
. Summer enrichment program open to students who will be juniors and seniors.

Boston University
Deadline: Fall and Academic Year Programs: May 15, Spring Programs: November 1, Summer Programs: April 1

Non-Boston University students are eligible to apply for grants and scholarships for any full-year, fall, spring, or summer program offered by Boston University International Programs. Grants and scholarships are awarded based on both need and merit. The dollar amounts vary and typically range from $300 to $3,000, depending on the student’s circumstances and the cost of the program.

CIEE
Deadline: April 1 (summer, fall and academic year programs), November 1 (winter, spring and calendar year programs)
Each year CIEE awards scholarships and grants to students who plan to study overseas. Competition for the CIEE scholarships and grants is keen and the quality of the materials submitted is very important.  The scholarship application procedure is entirely independent from the CIEE program application.  

DIS (Danish Insitute for Study Abroad)
Deadline: June 1 for fall, November 1 for Spring, April 1 for summer

The DIS Board has allocated scholarship funds for students who otherwise could not afford to study in Denmark. Four types of scholarships are offered, all awarded on the basis of financial need. The DIS Scholarship, consisting of grants in the range of $500-1,000 per semester plus a small number of $2,000 grants. The maximum summer scholarship is usually $500. The DIS Work Scholarship of $350 per semester (2005/2006) and $400 per semester (2006/2007); the Knud Helm-Erichsen Scholarship of $500 - $2,000; the Mary Dau Scholarship of $500 - $2,000.

IFSA- Butler
Deadline: The scholarship application deadlines are two weeks prior to the program application deadlines.  Please submit your scholarship application at the same time as your program application.
IFSA-Butler annually gives over $1,000,000 in financial awards to students enrolling in Institute for Study Abroad Programs. In addition to the general scholarships, they offer four memorial scholarships..

IES
Deadline: November 1, 2007 (Spring 2008); May 1, 2008 (Fall 2008).
IES offers merit-based scholarships of up to $3,000 to students enrolling in IES-sponsored programs.
  IES also offers need based scholarships of up to $1,500.

SFS (School for Field Studies)
Deadline: You must submit the SFS financial aid application within 10 days of acceptance to an SFS program.

The School for Field Studies (SFS) awards over $180,000 in need-based scholarships each year.  SFS greatly appreciates the support of our alumni and other generous donors who make this possible through their contributions to the SFS general scholarship fund and individual named scholarships.

SIT (School for International Training) 
Deadline: Application will not be reviewed until you have been accepted for admission.

About one-third of those who seek scholarships from SIT Study Abroad receive financial assistance to participate in our programs. Awards generally range from $500 to $5,000. Financial need is a primary consideration for all of our scholarship decisions.

These are full scholarships for intensive language study at Middlebury Summer Languages Schools in the critical languages:  Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian.
