Study Abroad in Education

Learning about education and schools or doing observations and fieldwork in another country while you study other subjects is a wonderful way to compare education systems and see how other societies organize education and learning opportunities for children, as well as get international teaching experience. It is also a great way to get to know and be involved with local residents other than college students.

Wellesley offers many opportunities for study abroad in education, with education curricula available in Australia, Denmark, England, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Spain. With proper approval, education courses completed abroad will count toward the Education Department’s Teacher Education or Education Studies minors.

In addition, beginning in fall 2007, Wellesley offers students studying abroad the opportunity to pursue education fieldwork that will count toward teacher certification. Students will be connected with local schools to observe classes and to learn about the local educational system. Of particular interest are opportunities at the following institutions in England:

  • The University of Manchester (http://www.manchester.ac.uk/), which offers strong programs in language, literacy, and communication, and in special education.
  • Cambridge University (http://www.cam.ac.uk/), which offers strong programs in elementary and secondary education, English teaching, history and philosophy of education, and education policy.
  • Roehampton University (http://www.roehampton.ac.uk/), which offers strong programs in early childhood education and childhood studies.

Similar arrangements are available in France, Mexico, Spain and Italy. Other sites may be possible with advance notice.

Students interested in studying education and/or doing education fieldwork abroad during their junior year are encouraged to contact the chair of the Education Department (Prof. Barbara Beatty: bbeatty@wellesley.edu), the Director of High School and Middle School Teacher Certification (Prof. Ken Hawes: khawes@wellesley.edu), the Director of Elementary Teacher Certification (Prof. Bernice Speiser: bspeiser@wellesley.edu), and the Director of International Study (Jennifer Thomas-Starck: jthomass@wellesley.edu) early in their sophomore year.
