Thank you for visiting our web site. Study abroad is an important part of your daughter's Wellesley College experience, and we strive to provide her with the materials and guidance she needs to make the most of her time away. We realize that parents will have questions about the process and encourage you to visit the other sections of our website for important information. In the meantime, answers to some of the questions we receive most frequently are below.

How do students choose a study abroad destination?
- Students may enroll in a program that is adminstered or affiliated with Wellesley College or they may select from a list of approximately 150 approved foreign study programs or overseas colleges/universities, a list of these programs is available here.
- In addition our office maintains a library with catalogs for most programs and the director has drop in hours most days during which students are encouraged to discuss potential programs.
- Program evaluations from past participants are available in our office, the most recent evaluations are also available to students on the Study Abroad First Class email conference.
- Currently there are five Study Abroad Mentors (SAMs) working various hours in our office. The SAMs are all returned study abroad students who serve as valuable resources on the Wellesley College study abroad experience.
- Every September we host a Study Abroad Fair on campus and invite representatives from many of our approved programs. This is a wonderful opportunity for your daughter to meet with the people who know these programs the best. Representatives from some of these programs also visit campus throughout the year holding information sessions and tables. In addition our office periodically offers information sessions on with particular themes, such as Art Abroad, Science Abroad, etc.. Upcoming meetings are posted on our calendar.
- Second semester First year and first semester sophomores are encouraged to attend a General Study Abroad Information session if they are considering studying abroad. At this meeting they will receive a Study Abroad Primer (also available on-line) and learn about Wellesley's study abroad process. Meetings for the current semester are posted on our calendar.
Application Process?
- In their second year students intending to study abroad anytime during their junior year must submit the Proposal to Study Away by December 1. The proposal will be reviewed by both their Class Dean and the Director of International Study and approved if academically sound.
- When the OIS confirms that we have received a student's Proposal, they will be sent a Study Abroad Application Cover Sheet and should begin working on their study abroad application immediately. The application along with the cover sheet must be submitted to the Office of International Study by the appropriate deadline. More information on the application process is available here.
- During the Spring semester preceding their semester/year abroad, students must attend a Study Abroad pre-departure orientation meeting and a pre-departure dinner. They must also submit a Leave of Absence form and both the student and one parent are required to sign the Approved Study Abroad Participation Agreement & Assumption of Risk and Release form. We can not pay tuition to your daughter's study abroad provider until we have received this signed form.
Cost and Billing Information
- All Wellesley College students who study abroad
continue to pay regular Wellesley College tuition while abroad ($17,385 per semester in 2007-08), but will not be charged for Wellesley room & board. Room,
board and other fees will vary by program and will be the responsibility of the student who will be billed directly by
the provider. The Office of International Study will be billed for the program's tuition. To help you with your budgeting, cost information for some programs for 2007-08 is available here. You may use these fees to estimate the costs of attendance for 2008-09 with the expectation that costs will increase approximately 5% a year. If the program you're looking for is not on this list, please contact Mireille McLaughlin at mmclaugh@wellesley.edu and she can send you cost information. Cost information is also available on the web sites of many of our approved programs, links to which are available here.

Students who normally receive financial aid will remain eligible for aid for their semester or year abroad and your family's contribution should stay the same as it would for a semester or year on Wellesley's campus. Families should apply for financial aid according to the normal financial
aid schedule, available here. You do not need to submit additional paperwork to indicate that your daughter will be studying abroad. Once she has been accepted to a program and submitted a Leave of Absense form (indicating when and where she will study abroad) we will submit an updated budget to the Financial Aid office. This budget will include the cost of Wellesley tuition, the study abroad program's room and board costs, airfare, books and personal expenses (based on estimates provided by the host university or study abroad program). The financial aid office will adjust your daughter's financial aid package to reflect the costs of her time abroad. If study abroad is more expensive then the equivalent time at Wellesley then her financial aid will be increased to cover the additional costs. An adjusted award statement will be sent out by the financial aid office the semester prior to study abroad. A worksheet for estimating financial aid for study abroad is located here and is made available to your daughter at a Study Abroad Financial Aid meeting.
