This picture was taken in Sept
or Oct of '03 on a ferry through the Sydney Harbour with the Opera
House
there
in the background. Heh that's actually
a funny picture because people ask me 2 things about it everytime...
they ask if I was actually there because I look superimposed, and they
ask if the water was really that blue. Yes, it really was! Anyway,
I was down in Sydney visiting my roommate from Wellesley. I actually
was in school up in Brisbane and she was in school in Sydney so we
met up there.

| I woke up to the sound of prayer the morning
we flew out of kuala lumpur. laid in bed for a few minutes listening
before getting up and making my way over to the window in darkness
to try to see if i could discern where it was coming from. the only
mosque i could think of was about a 10 minute taxi ride away.
it was 5:40 in the morning and daybreak had yet to come, but there
was a soft blue-tinged glow at the edge of the horizon where the
edge of the city met the forest, and little dots of light emanating
from street lamps. the streets themselves were empty, except for
a few scattered taxis. not a person in sight. the city had yet to
wake up, but it was teeming with life, breathing prayer and hymn,
the heart of it pulsating to the rhythm of the verses.
couldn't understand what was being said, but the sound of it was
captivating and meditative. it was a sonorous man's voice softly,
slowly and steadily resonating over the city.

This picture was taken
in front of "the bonny banks
of Loch Lomond." We were visiting the De Vere Cameron house, a
castle resort overlooking the loch. The mountain in the background
is Ben Lomond, another beautiful Scottish landmark.

From the
Galapagos Islands to the Amazon rainforests and the white beaches,
Ecuador offers unique experiences in which I feel very lucky to
have taken part. Along side all the beauty is an incredible poverty
that challenges the mind to consider how so much misery can exist
in a country with so many resources. The exploration of that question
has been the most rewarding part of my experience abroad.

My friend Lindsey from middle school
(who was studying art history for the year at Trinity College,
Dublin, Ireland),
her friend Zach from Notre Dame (who was studying architecture
in Rome, Italy for the year) and I went on a whirlwind tour of
Eastern Europe via Vienna (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Prague
(Czech Republic), Berlin (Germany), Wittenberg (Germany), and Füssen
(Germany).
Here Lindsey and I are dancing in front of the Saint
Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle. Lindsey who is an art history
major and wants to become an archeologist knows all these interesting
historical facts and had us dancing in front of the Cathedral
because St. Vitus (the man) is the patron saint of dancers and
actors (among
other things) but also he is invoked against epilepsy, nervous
disorders, and St. Vitus' Dance (Sydenham's chorea). It was a
gray and rainy in Prague that particular day and soon afterwards
the
skies opened on us. However, we were rewarded by seeing the gargoyles
(drain pipes!) all around the cathedral spluttering rain water
out of their open mouths.

Living in London for a semester was one of the best experiences
of my life! I was able to take classes of the highest quality at
UCL, met lots of awesome people, explored parts of western europe,
and just enjoyed living and breathing the everyday sights and sounds
of London. I had such a positive experience that I am going back
after graduation to complete a year of graduate work.

You wouldn't think that someone who had no water,
no map, no stove, no hut passes, and no way of getting out of an
area except by hitchhiking could look so happy! But that's New
Zealand for you.
