What is Pathways and
how will it benefit me?
Pathways is an intensive two-week residential academic program offered
by Wellesley College to eligible incoming students. A total of 24 students
are expected to participate. Pathways is designed to help you build
close work relationships with Wellesley faculty and teaching assistants.
Classes in critical analysis, writing, quantitative reasoning, and computer
technology will give you the opportunity to solidify your knowledge
and seek individualized advising. As a Pathways student, you will get
an early start on your first semester. This means that in addition to
your coursework, you will be introduced to many aspects of the College,
including residential life, computer facilities, and library resources before
classes begin!
Will I receive college
credit for Pathways?
Yes, by completing Pathways you earn a half unit (.50) of credit toward your
Wellesley degree! To satisfy the course requirements, you must satisfactorily
complete the two weeks of instruction in August and participate in two half-day
workshops that feature student presentations in September. You should keep in mind that Pathways is not a remedial
program. In fact, Pathways has an intensive workload and is fast paced.
How much does Pathways
cost? What about travel expenses?
The total cost associated with the program (e.g., room and board, tuition,
books, supplies, and travel in and around the Boston area) will be completely
covered by the college. However, you are expected to pay for travel
expenses to Wellesley. If necessary, transportation from the airport to the college will be provided at no cost to students. In addition, Pathways students who receive financial aid will have their summer work study contribution reduced by a prorated amount of $250.
What are the Pathways
dates and where will I live?
This year, classes start on Thursday, August 11th and end on Friday,
August 26th. However, students are expected to arrive on campus on Wednesday,
August 10th. On that date, students can move into Lake House, the Pathways
residence hall. Meals will be provided, and accommodations for students
with special needs are available. Extra storage space will be made available
upon request. Students will move into their regular first year dorms
on Sunday, August 28th.
Is
Pathways the same as First-Year Orientation?
Pathways is NOT the same as First Year Orientation - they are two completely
different programs. Over the summer, you will be receiving additional
information about the Orientation activities that will begin immediately
following Pathways. Since Pathways ends just as First Year Orientation
begins for all students, you should bring whatever you planned to bring
for the fall semester. Students who live in close proximity to the college
should use their own judgment.
Will
I need a computer?
We can't think of any student who wouldn't rather work on her own personal
computer. However, it is not necessary for you to bring your own computer.
Students will not be able to connect their own personal computers to
the Wellesley network until after the fall orientation program for first
year students. During Pathways, your computer assignments will be completed
in one of the Wellesley computing labs. We do ask that you complete
and return the Computer Survey that you received in the mail with your
Pathways information kit.
