Pathways is a credit-bearing program developed by Wellesley faculty, students, and staff to facilitate the first-year transition to college. The program is designed for students who are interested in increasing their understanding of the Internet as a research tool. In addition to learning about useful Internet search techniques, students are guided through a step-by-step research process that includes critical analysis, writing, quantitative reasoning, and technology. Pathways is unique in that the program is driven by a specific research topic. This year, we will be exploring the social phenomenon known as the "Digital Divide." Under the guidance of the Pathways faculty and teaching assistants, students will be encouraged to formulate and investigate questions pertaining to this topic.

As a Wellesley professor, I am confident that Pathways can benefit first-year students in several ways:

  • A well-written research paper requires a thorough understanding of the question and knowing where and how to get access to necessary documentation. Introducing students to the research process and electronic information resources without the demands of regular coursework is definitely a plus.
  • Pathways is an opportunity to earn a .50 unit of credit toward the Wellesley degree before the fall semester begins!
  • Pathways helps students build valuable and lasting networks...students get to know faculty and peers in a personalized setting.
  • Several Pathways workshops will be held during the fall semester, enabling students to continue to hone their skills and expand their network of peers and faculty.
  • Pathways is dedicated to providing students with academic advising regarding coursework, time management, available institutional resources, and other information relevant to the first-year experience.

I invite you to browse through this site. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any Pathways staff member.
