Pathways is a credit-bearing program developed by Wellesley faculty, students, and staff to facilitate the first-year transition to college. The program is designed for students who are interested in increasing their understanding of the Internet as a research tool. In addition to learning about useful Internet search techniques, students are guided through a step-by-step research process that includes critical analysis, writing, quantitative reasoning, and technology. Pathways is unique in that the program is driven by a specific research topic. This year, we will be exploring the social phenomenon known as the "Digital Divide." Under the guidance of the Pathways faculty and teaching assistants, students will be encouraged to formulate and investigate questions pertaining to this topic. As a Wellesley professor, I am confident that Pathways can benefit first-year students in several ways:
