The Philosophy department divides its courses and seminars into three subfields. Majors and minors must take a certain number of classes from each subfield.
The History of Philosophy
There is an ongoing philosophical conversation with an unbroken history going back to the fifth century BC, and in the course of that conversation many very good, very interesting solutions have been proposed. This is the area covered by the history of philosophy.
Value Theory
Value theory comprises ethics, political philosophy, and aesthetics: the theories of the good, the right, the just, and the beautiful.
Metaphysics and Theories of Knowledge
Metaphysics attempts to arrive at a characterization of reality as whole, in its most general features. The metaphysician tries to explain what the world is like, at the most fundamental level. Epistemology (also known as the theory of knowledge) attempts to give an account of the scope and nature of human knowledge and therefore of the limitations of human knowledge.
