I'm
still going to grad school for astronomy at U. Mich. Currently, my
days revolve around research and teaching. I'm rather enjoying it
all. My research is (roughly) about the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (which
is big, in spite of being a "dwarf", and I have _at_least_
a terrabyte of data, which is probably why it's taking me awhile).
When I teach, I'm usually teaching lab sessions for the undergrad
intro-level astronomy courses, although most recently I've had to
teach an entire mini-course by myself. Just be glad you don't run
into students at Wellesley who ask things like: "So, did NASA
fake the lunar landings?", "What if there're dinosaur eggs
on the Moon?", or even "You mean..._the_sun_ counts as a
_star_???" (imagine apporpriate look of complete astonishment
on the student's face). Needless to say, teaching never gets dull!
Monique Aller has an office just two doors down the hall from mine.
She has also been teaching and doing research...although her research
involves finding a mass function of blackholes as a function of host
galaxy velocity dispersions. She's currently stressing out because
she's going on an observing run to the Magellan telescope at the end
of this month. Her email address is: send.

Immediately,
after graduation I worked for my husband's company writing software.
Then I enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where I received
my master's degree. My thesis was a model for examining changes in
bulk viscosity in a binary fluid as pressure changed. A rise in bulk
viscosity would signal the onset of phase change and the Rayleigh-Brillouin
light scattering spectrum should exhibit telltale spikes. The fluid
was a rocket propellant, and Department of Defense was interested
in its basic properties. While I finished the required coursework
in three semesters it took me three more years to finish the thesis
because I had two children along the way and moved three times. I
was expecting my third when I gave my defense. I have been a stay-at-home
mom since, and we now have nine children in our family. We home school
our children. A liberal arts education was a good preparation! |

In
1993, Stuart and I started a business with the unlikely name of Llamagraphics
to become pioneers in the fledgling industry of creating software
for handheld computers, beginning with the Apple Newton Message Pad.
Our primary product, Life Balance (TM), is coaching software that
provides a dynamically ordered To Do List driven by the importance
of your goals, your desired allocation of time and effort, and feed-back
from what you get done each day. The ebb and flow of your task list
is managed automatically for you, which makes it easier to balance
the often-conflicting demands of career and personal life. Life Balance
for Palm OS was named one of the best productivity applications of
2001 by Handheld Computing magazine. In Spring 2002, we introduced
a desktop edition for Macintosh, and the Windows edition will be released
Fall 2002. Our web site http://www.llamagraphics.com includes lots
of essays taken from our daily lives, if anyone wants to know what
we're up to, that's definitely the place to look!

After
graduating, I took a programmer/analyst position in the Ocean Sciences
Division of a government contractor called Science Applications Inc.

primary customer was the Navy. The company is unusual in that it is
employee-owned. Over the years, it has grown from a technical research
firm of a couple thousand employees, highly-dependent on the federal
govern-ment, to a vast (40000+ employees, $6 billion revenues) diversified,
research and engineering company. Science Applications International

privately held by (mostly) current employees. I still work in the

of the acoustic environment, modeling of the sea floor, etc. I twice

Ph.D. atomic physics at Berkeley in 1983, switched fields to high
energy experimental physics, and worked as a postdoc on the Mark II
experiment at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Moved to
Cornell as an Assistant Professor in 1988 where my research focused

After
graduation, I spent two years at the University of California in Santa
Cruz, obtaining an MS in Astronomy. I returned to Massachusetts where
I was employed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics
and later at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, in opto-radar group. In 1982
my husband and I both resigned our positions at Lincoln Labs and returned
to graduate school at the Optical Sciences Center of the University
of Arizona. We completed our doctorates in 1986 and began research
positions at the Boeing High Technology Center outside of Seattle.
I find it hard to believe that I have been at Boeing for 15 years
doing various forms of applied research in optics and photonics. Currently
I am an Associate Technical Fellow in the Optical Technologies group
where I work mostly on internal research and development or government
contracts. My work at Boeing has varied from studies in nonlinear
optics for optical processing and computing, designing and building
a laser radar used to manufacture airplanes, designing and building
an interferometer for use in a wind tunnel to studies of photonic
bandgap devices for laser communications applications. Washington
State is a beautiful place to live and we enjoy many outdoor activities
year round.

Left
native New England for Pittsburgh, PA;
Bioengineering my initial foray.
Then
graduate school, where (please pardon initials),
A MS in EE from CMU made official
My
right to recite the old saying, in fun:
"I can't spell engineer, but now I are one!"
My
one claim to fame, with thesis complete,
Was having Carl Sagan say, "That's really neat!"
Married
my soulmate, joined Westinghouse Electric,
Designed robots and imaging systems, et cetric.
Patented
pattern recognizers and such;
Worked a long time, 'til I'd worked too much.
Now
I'm back in MA on thirty acres on a hill
Creating fine art in my studio for thrills.

Enjoying my life, as long as life's mine.

I received
my Ph.D. from Yale University in 1978 in experi-mental high-energy
physics under Bob Adair. After Yale, I did a 2-year post-doc at Ohio
State University in low temperature physics studying the transition
in composite materials from insulator to conductor. After OSU, I joined
AT&T Bell Labora-tories in New Jersey, studying semi-conductor
materials. I only worked there for a year before transferring back
to Columbus to get married. Because of the lack of physics research
at the Bell Labs facility in Columbus, I transferred to a department
that develops software for network management systems for tele-phone
companies. That work transition was very easy because of my extensive
experience with computers, particularly in high-energy physics. At
Bell Laboratories, now part of Lucent Tech-nologies, I was fairly
successful even though I chose to work part time for most of my years
there in order to raise my 3 children. I still work part time, although
very close to full time at 35 hours/week. I was a supervisor for a
couple of years before my 3rd child came along and forced me back
to part time work. I am currently a Distinguished Member of Staff
there. I was married in 1981 to Bruce Patton who is a Professor of
Physics at Ohio State University. We have 3 children: Ken (18), Alex
(16), and Lindsey (12). Ken is now a freshman at Swarthmore College
and is strongly considering physics as a major. |

(74) and Ph.D. (79) in Astronomy from UCLA. Currently Ebenezer Fitch
Professor of Astronomy, Williams College. My current research is focused
on chemical abundances in planetary nebulae as a function of their
progenitor masses and metallicities. The project included use of archived
ultraviolet spectra from the IUE satellite, optical observations from
the 2.1 meter telescope at Kitt Peak, the 1.5 meter telescope at Cerro
Tololo, as well as computer modeling of the nebulae and the evolution
of their central stars. On this project, students have observed at
Kitt Peak. This project has recently been expanded to investigate
the abundances of sulfur and argon in planetary nebulae. In the stellar
mass range that produces planetary nebulae, the abundances of these
elements are not expected to be affected by the nuclear processing
that drives changes in the carbon, helium, and nitrogen abundances
during billions of years of stellar evolution. So by studying sulfur
and argon in planetary nebulae now, we have the exciting prospect
of investigating the chemical evolution of the Galaxy over time.

I realized
during my first year of grad school in architecture at the University
of Oregon (1971-72) that the Wellesley classes were not just exciting
ends to themselves, but excellent underpinning for a breadth of future
study and design. I shared my position of top student out of 150+
others in three structure classes that year only with another Wellesley
woman! I spent 3 years after that at MIT, graduating as their 'most
outstanding student in Architecture' in 1975, the first woman to do
so. I found out that I was nominated for that (and the AIA medal)
by Waclav Zalewski, a wonderful structural engineer and professor,
from whom I had taken an upper level course that focused on developing
mathematical rules of thumb for building physics design. After twenty
plus years of architectural practice and no teaching, I took the FitzGibbon
Chair (a revolving chair in architecture geared to practitioners)
at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). I am presently an Assistant Professor
at CMU. I still talk to my students about holistic structural integrity.
They do wonder a bit when I explain that they can imagine their buildings
as made of notebook paper and tape, and then separately, as the same
mass made of sheets of layer cake, no frosting, when thinking of performance
during an earthquake. I have had several opportunities to work on
multi-year projects with Ove Arup engineers, whom I consider the best
worldwide; those projects have been published plentifully. My experience
in Physics at Wellesley gave me the knowledge and base (creatively
and critically) and the fearlessness to incorporate very good thinkers/designers
into design teams. |

I was
lucky to get into the computer field in the 1960's before there were
experts and I managed a similar but more side door entry into the
religion-science field (R/S) in the late 80's. The growing interest
in the (R/S) dialogue is fueled by current efforts
in bioengineering (what is a human being?), physics (what is matter?)
and cosmology (universal questions). Scientists are now asking questions
which were the exclusive purview of philosophers and theologians.
An increasing number of theologians with philosophical leanings are
bravely venturing across the divide, reading extensively mainly in
the biological sciences. Any one interested in this growing field
can visit the web site for the Institute on Religion in an Age of
Science (IRAS) at www.iras.org. I currently serve on the council and
the long-range conference planning committee and will happily try
to answer any questions that cannot be answered from the web site.

Since
Wellesley, I have been a computer programmer off and on. Mostly off.
I began by teaching myself FORTRAN when Chris was in graduate school
at Berkeley. Boxes of punched cards input into the IBM mainframe the
size of a small house. After lengthy "maternity leaves"
while our two daughters were growing up, I returned as a programmer
analyst at Beneficial Data Processing for ten years. I had an early

End of professional life. Chris was a con-tract employee with BellSouth
at that time, working in the cell-
ular phone industry. I couldn't work overseas. For five years, we
lived in Australia (Sydney), New Zealand (Auckland), Germany (Düsseldorf),
and back to Sydney. We moved to Santa Fe, where we have lived happily
ever after since 1997. Today is a happy day. We had a new grandson
born this morning. He joins 5-year-old twin brothers. With a lot of
travel and many house-guests, I confine myself to volunteer work at
the public library and the library of the Laboratory of Anthropology.
LOA (part of the Museum of New Mexico) has one of the largest research
collections of Southwest archaeology and anthropology in the country.
The history, art, geology of the Southwest is fascinating.

Most
of my work has been in the defense industry. My first job in 1962,
was at Bell Laboratories, working in the area of ballistic missile
defense. After I got my MA in nuclear physics from Rice, I worked
at Shell Development in Houston on computer
simulations for recovering oil from shale. I found that I enjoyed
the mathematical side of my work very much, so I decided to pursue
a Ph.D. in numerical analysis at Rice. After receiving that degree
I moved to Los Angeles and began searching for a teaching position,
but jobs were scarce at that time, as I went back to the defense industry,
where I worked for the remainder of my career. When my defense career
ended, I had time to follow other paths that beckoned My first adventure
was working as an extra and as the stand in for Henry Gibson in a
movie called "Monster in the Closet." I have always been
interested in archaeology, and so I volunteered for an Earthwatch
project, the excavation of a Crusader castle on the island of Cyprus.
I enjoyed the work and the people there very much. I enjoy Greek dancing
for many years and take a dance class every week. At Wellesley, I
took one semester of music and never learned to play an instrument
or to read music. Now, I have learned to play an instrument called
the hammered dulcimer and I enjoy teaching beginners how to use a
computer, to dance Greek dances, or to play the hammered dulcimer.

taking graduate courses in Athens at the research center Demokritos,
I am an experimental particle physicist, helping to build up the group
which by now is composed of 15 people at various levels. I got my
doctorate from Ioannina University in
1977 and have been collaborating in bubble chamber experiments at
CERN since 1969. Since 1980 in a large experiment at LEP, (Aleph),
I have been preparing for experiments with the Large Hadron Collider
(CMS). In general, my work is in neutrino physics and lepton interactions.
I have spent over seven years of my life in Geneva, working on the
experiments there. Since 1995 I had been head of the group, (official
title was "director of research"), until last year when
I retired. My poetic side blossomed four years ago. My web page as

After
obtaining my Ph. D. in electron spin resonance of DNA and its constituents,
at Duke. I applied successfully for an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship
in Germany. By the time I got there, it was obvious that work I had
planned to do was impossible because a piece of equipment was never
delivered. I stayed in Germany, since I would be marrying Manfred
Winnewisser, who had been at Duke and was returning to Germany. Working
with him in gas phase molecular spectroscopy became a permanent habit.
But that meant difficulty in finding two jobs in any given town. The
upshot was that we spent 35 years in Germany, during which I had a
fellowship for the first two, and another fellowship for four more
years (half time) in the early 1990s. Otherwise I was a guest with
a desk in the institute where my husband worked. This led to some
lovely spectroscopy in the millimeter and infrared regions, studying
molecules found in the interstellar medium and in the upper atmosphere.
The lack of a proper job did not prevent invitations to speak occasionally
at international meetings, edit journals and participate in meeting
organization, which provided the recognition that made it enjoyable,
as did the interactions with our graduate students and many visitors
in the laboratory over the years. My most recent laboratory research
has been about the infrared spectrum of solid hydrogen, and my biggest
project right now is a biography of Hedwig Kohn, former member of
the Department at Wellesley. Currently my husband and I are Adjunct
Professors of Physics at Ohio State University enjoying physics in
one form or other. |

After

as major parent while my husband Art worked hard doing physics at
Princeton. In 1966 we had a sabbatical in England, which stretched
to two happy years there. We left Princeton and came to Ithaca, New
York where Art was a professor in applied physics at Cornell. With
my youngest in school, I started my career there as a math teacher
at Ithaca High School. I retired three months ago after 33 years as
a math teacher and for 15 as head of the department. I loved teaching
and managing the department of almost 20 teachers. It was a wonderful
career for me. During those years I also taught a couple of classes
in English, when needed and for four years was president of the 500
member Teachers' Association. During a sabbatical, I got a Master's

this program with students who reminded me of college days twenty-five
years earlier.

here 33 years! In addition to teaching the usual range of courses,
I was department chair for about 10 years. I have developed a number
of computer and technological applications for teaching. I have been

I did
my graduate work in spectroscopy at low temperatures at Duke University.
Duke was a very supportive place for a woman aspiring to a career
in physics. There I met and married Bob Richardson, got my Ph.D.,
taught at North Carolina College and a
physics class at Duke, and had two daughters, Jennifer and Pamela.
Bob finished his degree and we moved to Ithaca, New York. In the Fall
of 1966 Bob began work at Cornell in the laboratory of David Lee.
Their goal was to observe the nuclear magnetic phase transition in
solid He 3. In collaboration with Douglas Osheroff, a student who
joined the group in 1967, they worked on cooling techniques and NMR
instrumentation for studying low temperature helium liquids and solids.
In the Fall of 1971, they made the accidental discovery that liquid
He 3 undergoes a pairing transition similar to that of superconductors.
The three were awarded the Nobel Prize for that work in 1996. When
the girls were both in junior high school, I began to teach introductory
physics at Cornell. I have recently (2003) completed writing an algebra
based introductory physics textbook, College Physics, McGraw-Hill
publ., with Alan Giambattista and my husband, Robert Richardson. I
continue to teach a pre-med, introductory physics course at Cornell.

After
Wellesley I worked at the Air Force Cambridge Research Lab in Boston
and at Hanscom Field. I was involved with a group working on various
types of high frequency surface-mounted antennas and resonant modes
of cubic and spherical YIG crystals
used for delay lines. At Hanscom, I was introduced to the earliest
of computers. We had the AFCRL computer which, I believe was a predecessor
of Whirlwind. Later the Lab bought a mainframe IBM computer and everyone
moved on to FORTRAN. While at the Air Force lab, I took courses at
Northeastern University and continued after my son was born until
I received my master's degree in physics. After that I was at home
with
my children for 17 years putting on puppet shows, playing the piano
and generally working with kids and family. Seventeen years after
I left Hanscom and went to Lincoln Labs, I was amazed to find that
FORTRAN was still a popular language although much expanded. I have
been retired since 1996 from MIT Lincoln Lab where I worked as assistant
staff in an antenna group. I did a lot of computer programming, using
FORTRAN, Matlab, C and various other languages.

to China. I "retired" in 1989 from being a patent agent
and searcher and writing software and moved from the Washington DC
area to New Mexico. Before that I was working on military contracts
studying nuclear weapons effects. Actually getting involved in patent
research work was a lot more fun. My clients were IBM, lawyers, and
investors, particularly during the court fight over the laser patent
(the wrong guy won). I was lucky to be just down the hall from Ted

nine, I began teaching middle school science and math. After my husband,
a pediatrician, completed his studies to become a child psychiatrist,
he accepted a position at Dartmouth Medical School. We bought a large
house in Hanover and rented the third floor to Dartmouth students.
I was the troubleshooter for any and all electrical, plumbing and
heating problems.

I worked
on and off at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and still keep
up with the work there even though I retired in 1993. I married in
1949 to a scientist at BNL. We spent a year at the University of Illinois,
where I got a masters in physics. I returned to work after the birth
of 4 girls (1954-1960), but found it impossible to keep up with the
physics. I started mathematical analysis for the physicists, which
eventually led to computer work I did until I retired. It meant going
all the way from paper tape machines, then to magnetic tapes and punch
cards on the mainframes, until finally the PC's. I got my 2nd masters
in Applied Math at Stony Brook in 1977 so I could keep up with the
data analysis for the physicists. I worked then in Solid State.
