We
invite you to learn about our physics program at
Wellesley College. Contemporary physics encompasses the
study of the physical universe from the smallest systems
- atoms, nuclei, and elementary particles - to the very
largest - planets, stars, and galaxies. A central theme
in all branches of physics is the search for unifying
principles underlying the diverse phenomena of nature. At
Wellesley, we offer a range of courses and academic
experiences that focus both on the exploration of
fundamental questions and the applications of our
knowledge in an increasingly technology-oriented society.
Our
major is designed to provide a full range of academically
demanding courses and research experiences that
constitute an effective preparation for students who are
interested in a variety of careers. From graduate
training in physics or a closely related field, to
careers in engineering, industry, finance, computer
science, medicine, and teaching, the sort of
critical-thinking and quantitative skills developed
during the course of the physics major provides an
excellent foundation for a wide range of post-graduate
options.
More
generally, in the spirit of a liberal arts education,
physics coursework prepares all students for a lifelong
experience in discovering and applying knowledge. Our
department offers a variety of introductory courses
appropriate for all students at the College.
The
following links are designed to introduce you to our
physics program at Wellesley - the faculty and students,
the coursework and research opportunities, and our
alumnae and the variety of careers that they have
pursued. Of course, no webpage can truly replace a real
visit - you are invited to come see us in action! If you
are new on campus, or just visiting as a prospective
Wellesley student, please feel free to contact the
Department Chair, Professor Ted Ducas,
to arrange for a tour of our facilities, a classroom
visit, or a simple chat.
