Accessible Parking Information
for Students, Staff, and Faculty
with Permanent or Temporary Disabilities

Accessible Parking, often referred to as Handicapped Parking, is available at Wellesley College. Accessible Parking needs may be accommodated by an assignment to a parking lot closer to a campus activity or by making the driver eligible to park in designated accessible parking spaces. These spaces are located in parking lots, along campus roads, and adjacent to buildings.

The Wellesley College Police Department issues all parking assignments. They receive assistance evaluating requests for accessible parking from the Director of Disability Services.

Who is eligible for Accessible Parking at Wellesley College?

Generally, students, staff, faculty, and guests are eligible for Accessible Parking if they have a permanent or temporary disability that significantly impairs their ability to walk. Individuals who already have a State accessible parking license plate or placard have access to designated spaces but are asked to contact the Wellesley College Police for a Wellesley College parking pass and for gate access to Founders Lot if needed. Others with a medically documented permanent or temporary disability may apply for accessible parking access.

Generally, the criteria for access to a designated accessible space is based on a medically documented inability to walk 200 feet without resting. Access to a closer parking lot without access to designated accessible parking spaces requires a lesser eligibility threshold.

How do I apply for Accessible Parking at Wellesley College?

To apply for accessible parking, please email or complete a request form with Jim Wice, Director of Disability Services, jwice@wellesley.edu stating your need and whether you are requesting access to a particular lot or designated accessible spaces. Your doctor will need to write a letter on letterhead specifying the medical diagnosis, prognosis and description of any walking limitations. The doctor can direct the letter to the Director of Disability Services and fax it to him at 781-283-3619.

The Director of Disability Services then will make a recommendation to the Wellesley College Police. If determined eligible, you will receive a parking assignment/pass issued by the Police Department.

Also, each State has a Registry of Motor Vehicles that grant accessible parking plates and placards. In Massachusetts residents with temporary or permanent disabilities can apply for either a plate or a placard. This information is available on the Internet at:
