Wellesley College has established a system to notify community members of crimes or other serious incidents that may pose a threat to the community. This system complies with the Timely Warning Notice requirement of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (as amended in October 1998).

To aid in the prevention of crime or other serious incidents, the Wellesley College Police Department, in collaboration with other departments on campus, issues Campus Crime Alerts to notify community members about selected crimes in and around our community. Community members who know of a crime or other serious incident should report that incident as soon as possible to the Wellesley College Police Department (extension 5555) so that a Campus Crime Alert can be issued, if warranted.

Alternatively, community members can report crimes or other serious incidents to the Office of the Dean of Students (extension 2322), the Office of Residential Life (extension 2679), or the College Ombudsperson (extension 3566). Representatives of these offices will promptly notify and work with the Police Department to issue a Campus Crime Alert, if one is needed. We encourage other College administrators who know of a crime or other serious incident, in or around our community, to report the matter promptly to the Police Department.

Distributing Campus Crime Alerts

The Wellesley College Police Department distributes the Campus Crime Alerts through a number of different methods. Once the College determines that a Campus Crime Alert will be issued, the Police Department prepares the Alert and posts it on the FirstClass Conference "Official Announcements." The department will also post the Alert to several other FirstClass conferences. In addition to the postings, the Alert will also be posted here on the Police Department web site.

The department also works in conjunction with the Office of Residence Life to post Alert flyers on bulletin boards located throughout campus residence halls. Police Department members also post the flyers on bulletin boards located in other administrative and academic buildings on campus. Finally, the department posts the Alerts in the Campus Police Station so visitors to the station have an opportunity to view the notices. Campus Crime Alerts are located next to the Daily Crime Log adjacent to the welcome desk at the Campus Police Station.

These varied methods ensure that the maximum number of people will read the notice and pass it on to other community members.
