Preventing Car Theft

Don't Make It Easy for a Thief to Steal Your Wheels

  •
  • Every year, more than a million vehicles are stolen in the United States. That's about one vehicle every 30 seconds.

  • Stolen vehicles are also often used to commit other crimes.

  • Don't become a victim of this serious crime.

Reduce Your Risk

  •
  • Never leave your keys in an unattended car, even while running a quick errand.

  • Always lock your car, even if it's in front of your home.

  • Copy your tag number and vehicle identification number (VIN) on a card and keep them with your driver's license. Keep the registration with you, not in the car.

  • Keep the keys to your home and car separate.

  • Never attach a tag with your name and address to a key ring. If the keys are lost or stolen, the tag will lead a thief directly to your home.

  • Avoid leaving your car unattended in public parking lots for extended periods of time.

  • Avoid parking in isolated areas with little foot or auto traffic. Be especially alert in unstaffed lots and enclosed parking garages.

  • Take advantage of Operation ID to engrave a personal number on CD players, tape decks and similar items.

  • Consider the purchase and installation of security devices, such as alarms, "kill switch," locking gas caps, and interior hood lock and release.

  • If you think someone is following you, drive to the nearest police or fire station, open service station, or other open business to get help.

  • Don't pick up hitchhikers and don't hitchhike yourself.

  • Keep your car in good running condition. Have enough gas to get there and back.

  • If you often drive at night, or alone, consider a cellular phone to make it easier to summon help in an emergency. Call the WCPD in an emergency at 781-283-5555.

What To Do

  •
  • If your car is broken into or stolen, inform police immediately.

  • When buying a car from anyone except an authorized dealer, check the license number and vehicle identification with the WC Police Department for verification before you part with your money.
